Bury Me With All My Books –– Dead OAU Student's Last Wish

The last note by a part-four Law Student of Obafemi
Awolowo University, who allegedly committed suicide,
Dipo Ige, was that his books should be buried with
him. Ige was said to have committed suicide in his
private hostel penultimate Saturday at Ashiefa,
Ibadan Road, Ile-Ife and was buried at his hometown
in Iree, Osun State on Sunday.
It was gathered that Ige and his girlfriend had a
misunderstanding before his death. But while
controversy still surrounds Ige’s death, he cautioned
in the note that no one should blame his girlfriend...
According to Punch, Ige said his valuables should be
distributed to certain people. Part of the note read:
"As I plan to end my life, please bury my books with
me. My reason for this action is best known to me.
Please don’t blame my girlfriend (name withheld). She
knows nothing about this. Share my properties
accordingly to…”
Fresh facts, however, emerged on Sunday that Ige
sent a message to his mum before his action. It was
learnt that due to network problem, the message did
not get to the recipient until over an hour after it was
sent.
A close friend to Ige, who pleaded anonymity
narrated, “That day about 9pm, Ige sent a text
message to his mum. He told her to come to Ile-Ife
immediately, adding that any delay could mean that
the mum would meet him dead. When she eventually
got the message around 10pm, she immediately
alerted his close friend, Bola Okiji, to check on him.
Unfortunately, Okiji was not in Ile-Ife, he was at
Ilesha.
“The mum sent another lady living close to him to
check him. The lady met Ige’s door locked. She
peeped through the key hole and saw Ige, who
appeared lifeless. She screamed, broke the door and
raised the alarm, which attracted the neighbours.”
Anyway, his friend Okiji is insisting that Ige
committed suicide because of “academics love.” He
said Ige was a brilliant student in second class upper
grade before his death. What a sad end!

Latest News On ASUP Strike 2014: A Must Read For All Polytechnic Students

According to the report

bad as polytechnic lecturers accuse The Federal Government of
Insincerity. The ASUP/FG

nationwide. The F.G delegation to the meeting, held
at the federal secretariat in Abuja, is led by the

by its president, Chibuzor Asamogu. The meeting
went rowdy when the leadership of the National
Association of Polytechnic Students, (NAPs), invited
as observers to the meeting, accused the lecturers of
fighting for selfish interests. The ASUP members
fumed and accused the federal government of
inviting students to such meeting in order to harass
lecturers. The NAPS president, Ogbonnaya SUnday,
however, also accused the government of
insensitivity to the plight of students. ASUP has been
on strike since October demanding among others,
proper funding of polytechnics, and an end to
discrimination of polytechnic graduates in the labour
market. More on ASUP Strike coming…

When Was The Last Time You Read A Book? | Time To Cure The ‘Aliteracy’

A new type of reading problem is currently sweeping this world. It is
called aliteracy. It is defined as “the quality or state of being able to
read but being uninterested in doing so.”
Reading, which was once indulged in as a pleasure is now often
spurned as a chore, and people do not actually view it as fun
anymore.
Many adults are aliterate too. It is clear that reading ability is not
always matched by reading desire. This is true even among very well-
educated people. Majority of people that I have come across, after
reaching home from work or school either turn on their television (to
watch movies) or radio (to listen to music) instead of picking up a
book to read.
The question I ask is; what has happened to reading?
In recent decades, its popularity has succumbed to the attention-
grabbing media. Almost every household today is occupied with a set
of television and radio. All these media are filled with interest –
arousing programs that make it difficult for one to forgo them.
Perhaps the most time-consuming competitor of reading is television.
According to research, by age 65 the average person will have spent
nine years of his life watching TV. Since the rewards of reading are so
often sacrificed to the flickering screen, it would be well to consider
the following.

The Benefits of Reading
Reading stimulates the imagination : Television does your thinking for
you. Everything is spelled out: facial expressions, voice inflections,
and scenery.
With reading, however, you select the cast, set the stage, and direct
the action. You can make each character look exactly the way you
want him to look. You’re more in control of things when you read a
book than when you see something on TV. “Television captures the
imagination but does not liberate it. A good book at once stimulates
and frees the mind”, a doctor once said.
Reading develops verbal skills: No child or adult becomes better at
watching television by doing more of it. What skills are required are
so elemental that we have yet to hear of a television viewing
disability.
In contrast, reading requires and develops verbal skills; it is
inextricably linked with speech and writing. There is no question that
a person’s success as a student depends enormously on his/her
vocabulary, both in what he/she can understand as he/she reads and
in how he/she reasons as he/she writes. The only way to build
vocabulary is by reading.
Reading promotes patience: More than a thousand images may flash
across the TV screen in just one hour, leaving little time for the viewer
to reflect on what he is seeing. This technique literally programs a
short attention span. Not surprisingly, some studies link excessive TV
watching with impulsive decision making and restlessness—in both
children and adults.
Reading requires patience. Sentences, paragraphs, and pages unfold
slowly, in sequence, and according to a logic that is far from intuitive.
At his/her own pace, the reader must interpret, evaluate, and reflect
upon what is on the page. Reading is a complex decoding process
that demands and develops patience.
It is most often said, you can hide something from an African if only
you put it into a book. Should that really be the case? After reading
this article, I hope you will make a promise to pay attention to the
books, same way you pay attention to the screens…

College of Education Lecturers Start Indefinite Strike

COEASU, an acronym of the Colleges of
Education Academic Staff Union has started on
an indefinite strike in order to “salvage the
institutions from total collapse” Daily Trust
reported
The strike was called on Monday, leading to
the suspension of academic activities at the
Federal Colleges of education nationwide.
The lecturers are concerned over the Federal
Government’s Integrated Personnel Payment
System (IPPS) as well as on the decaying
infrastructure in the colleges. The strike came
soon after university lecturers ended a long-
drawn industrial action that lasted nearly six
months.
An official of COAESU, who does not want to
be named because he was not authorised to
speak, said the union went on strike because it
appeared this was the “only language that the
Federal Government understands.”
“Our colleges are rotting away; no befitting
libraries, hostels, lecture halls and other
structures. The books in our libraries today are
outdated,” he said. The official said colleges of
education needed adequate funds for
transformation to enable them provide the
expected services to the nation.
“Another vital issue which COEASU wants
government to address is the implementation
of migration on its junior staff to the IPPS
system…. COEASU wants government to stop
the implementation of IPPS on the colleges of
education because it will disrupt its progress,”
he said.
He said “colleges of education as teacher-
training institutions have unique features
different from that of universities. We have
teacher training and teaching practice
programmes which are basic instruments for
producing qualitative teachers but government
is not allocating funds for these programmes.”
The official added that colleges of education
are sponsoring their products for such
programmes out of their salary allocations,
and that if the IPPS was implemented these
programmes would automatically be wiped out
from the system.

BREAKING: ASUU Strike Is Over

Information reaching NastyGist.Com from Minna, the capital of Niger
State, venue of the high-powered and strategic meeting called by the
leadership of ASUU on Monday is very positive, to say the least.
Following "fruitful deliberations" and proper consideration of the
Memorandum of Understanding signed with the federal government
last Wednesday, the National Executive Council of ASUU has called off
its five-month old strike, effective immediately.
National President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Fagge Isa had told journalists
that:
He is optimistic that the outcome of the consultation will be positive.
The MoU addressed the core demands of ASUU as well resolutions
agreed to between it and government in the November 4 marathon
meeting with President Jonathan.
These include a non-victimisation clause, provision and deposit of
N200 billion infrastructure revitalisation funds in an account with the
Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, details of disbursement of the funds and
payment of salary arrears which has accrued to the teachers during
the strike.
Dear Nigerian students, you all can now go back to school. It's over!

Finally ASUU Signs Agreement With FG, Calls Off Strike

Technically, the ASUU strike has come to an end as government has
finally done the needful...
The Federal Government and the leadership of ASUU led by its
President, Dr. Nasir Fagge, has signed the much talked about
Memoradum of Understanding on the restructured 2009 Agreement, on
Wednesday.
ASUU President, Dr. Fagge said the document signed would be
presented to the union to take an affirmative and positive stand on
the suspension of the 5 months old industrial action. He said with
the signing of the MOU the 5month old strike would come to an end
in approximately one week from now...
In the words of the ASUU President:
"This is the response to the letter we wrote to Mr. President and this
document would now be forwarded to our members and our members
would give us direction. We are hoping that we would be able to meet
with our members in less than a week.
"I don’t have the power to call off the industrial action, it is only our
members that can do that. And our members gave us a message to
give to the Federal Government which we have done and within one
week our members would meet. We already have the document which
shows that Government is committed”.
The ASUU President said the development and revitalization of
Nigeria’s education sector is for our benefit.
“It is never too late for the nation to turn a new leaf and do what is
right. Other countries that are smaller and less powerful than Nigeria
have done it and have succeeded. It is rather unfortunate that Nigeria
is not close to some of these smaller nations around us. It is now, we
must properly fund our universities, we have lost lot of capital to
nations like Ghana and Togo”, Fagge said.
He therefore assured Nigerians that ASUU would not take long in
ensuring that the right thing is done.

Update On ASUU Strike: Federal Government Makes U-turn

After realizing that it doesn't have the capacity to carry out its threat
to ASUU, the Presidency on Monday said they are longer interested in
the December 9 deadline that was handed over to the striking
university teachers to return to work or get fired.
Funny enough, the Presidency is now deceiving itself by claiming 70%
of lectures returned to work...
The Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on
Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, said this while briefing journalists on
the payment of the N200bn by the Federal Government into the
“Revitalisation of Universities Infrastructure” account with the Central
Bank of Nigeria.
Okupe’s claim of “substantial compliance” was however described as
total falsehood by ASSU leadership, who also said it would not attend
a meeting on Wednesday with the Supervising Minister of Education,
Nyesom Wike, and vice-chancellors on the University Needs
Assessment Report Implementation Committee.
Okupe had claimed that Government is soft pedalling on the threat to
sack the defiant ASUU members because many senior citizens and
institutions had intervened. He said that as of Sunday evening,
government had reports that there was substantial compliance by
many lecturers with the directive.
The Presidential aide added that the development encouraged the
government to mellow down.
Okupe however added that there is proof for the N200billion now and
pleaded with ASUU to end the strike.

This Government Is Not Ready, The Strike Continues ––ASUU

Public university lecturers under the umbrella of the Academic Staff
Union of Universities, ASUU, on Sunday insisted that they would not
return to the classrooms on Monday as directed by the federal
government.
They also accused the President Gooodluck Jonathan-led Government
of insincerity in its bid to resolve the 6 months old dispute. ASUU
President, Dr. Nasir Fagge, confirmed their stand to go on with the
strike...
The Federal Government had through the Executive Secretary of the
National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie, deferred its
earlier ultimatum to the lecturers to resume work on Monday (today)
or risk being sacked. The shift was to enable them to participate in
the burial of Prof. Festus Iyayi, a former president of ASUU on
Saturday.
Before this, the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, had
advised the striking lecturers to return to work on or before December
4 or face dismissal.
But ASUU had in a news bulletin to its chapters after its meeting in
Ekpoma, Edo State on Sunday, said the Federal Government had not
met its conditions for suspending the over five months’ strike.
When asked by Punch if the members of the union would go back to
work today and if they had confirmed the N200bn the Federal
Government claimed to have deposited in a special account at the
Central Bank of Nigeria, Fagge simply replied, “No to both questions.”
ASUU had in the bulletin insisted that the government threat to sack
its members would not break the union’s resolve to pursue its action
to a logical conclusion.
A source privy to the meeting, said:
“No Jupiter will force us to go and teach until all the agreements are
documented. The Federal Government is not sincere. If indeed the
authorities have agreed, why will they be afraid to document what has
been agreed upon?
“Let the vice-chancellors, who can teach, go and do so. But our
members are determined not to sign any attendance register
tomorrow (today). The threat does not bother us, as truth will always
supercede deception, lies and any form of intimidation.”
