Jonathan Begins Counter Operation Against All G7 Governors

Rattled by the defection of five out of its seven aggrieved governors to the All Progressives Congress, APC, it is now clear to President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party that things are not the same anymore.
Consequently, an emergency meeting has been scheduled for next Monday to deal with all the issues.
According to Punch, the party’s leadership at the meeting would determine the fate of the rebel governors. It was further gathered that the emergency meeting would, among other things, decide on what punitive measures to be taken against the governors and all the lawmakers who are set to join them.

Sources close to the party told Punch that President Jonathan and the PDP leaders are afraid that there could be a mass defection of PDP members in the National Assembly to the APC.

They are afraid that PDP is heading towards a minority status in the National Assembly.
“We are going to consider all the legal options before deciding on punitive measures for the governors and lawmakers that defect to the APC.
“Nothing is on the table yet, but I can assure you that the PDP will hit back. One of the punitive measures we will consider is impeachment of the governors and how feasible it is. By Monday, we will unfold our strategies. Also, we must ensure that the PDP does not become a minority party in the National Assembly,” an insider told Punch in Abuja.

4 Arriving Passengers From US Collapse At Muritala Mohammed Airport Lagos Due To Heat!

There was pandemonium at the Muritala Muhammed International
Airport (MMIA) Lagos, yesterday evening when four passengers who
arrived the city from Atlanta in the United States of America,
collapsed due to excessive heat at the arrival hall of the airport
terminal.
According to Leadership Newspaper, the passengers, who had arrived
aboard Delta Airline, were waiting for baggage reclaim when the
4 who had just arrived from the US where the temperature is much
cooler, got overwhelmed by the heat in the arrival area and collapsed.
A source close to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) told
LEADERSHIP Weekend that the cooling system at the airport was not
working when the incident happened and that it might be due to the
current remodelling of the airport.
It was learnt that two of the passengers were rushed to an
undisclosed hospital in an ambulance belonging to the Federal
Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)
In his reaction to the development, the general manager, public affairs
of FAAN, Yakubu Dati, said the situation was exaggerated by online
reports.
Another FAAN official contacted who preferred anonymity said the
unhealthy situation at the arrival hall of the airport was not new to
most air travellers who had had to contend with it as they passed
through immigration and baggage collection.
For those coming from Europe it is like coming from an
extremely cold environment to an extremely hot environment and
passengers have to sweat it out as they go through immigration
formalities and then through the tortuous collection of their in
luggage,” he said.

Protesters Disrupt Stella Oduah’s Award Ceremony In London

An award event in London was on Thursday night disrupted by some
protesting Nigerian women who kicked against the inclusion of the
Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah as one of the recipients of the
awards.
The event, which held at the Radison Hotel, Central London, was
organized by the Global Peace Movement to present “Peace,
Development and Security” award to Governor Yero; while the Aviation
Minister, Stella Oduah, was to get an award for “Aviation
transformation and best performing minister in Nigeria”.
The chaos started when the citation of Ms. Oduah, who was
represented, was being read as prelude to the presentation of the
award.
Suddenly, a woman who gave her name as Taiwo Akpabio started
speaking and shouting, condemning the conferment of the award on
Ms. Oduah.
Speaking at the top of her voice, Ms. Akpabio said it was shameful
and insulting for the organizers to give an award to the minister after
series of air mishaps in the country under her watch, which resulted in
loss of many lives, as well as the alleged scandal in the purchase of
the bullet-proof BMW cars involving the minister.
Chaos and confusion descended on the venue for sometime as all
efforts to calm down the protester failed.
Insisting that she had the right to speak out and criticize the
insensitivity of the organizers, Ms. Akpabio had to be dragged out of
the venue by security officials of the hotel.
Weekly Trust reports that as Ms. Akpabio was being bundled out,
another protester who gave her name as Maryam Awolowo took the
floor and rained invectives against the organizers for giving an award
to Ms Oduah.
She too was dragged out of the venue of the awards event.
Both women asked rhetorical questions, including how much the
organizers were paid to give the awards to the recipients.
It took a while before normalcy was restored and the event continued
with the presentation of the peace and security award to Governor
Yero.

Actor Saheed Balogun Drags Ex-Wife Fathia Balogun To Court for Using His Name

Few years ago, Saheed Balogun reportedly said he would soon stop
his ex-wife, actress Fathia Balogun, from using his name - Balogun,
since they are no longer husband and wife.
Saheed was quoted to have said: “She is my ex. As for my name
that she is still answering, the deed will be done soon. The
Nigerian law says that after three or four years, you can do
something about it. If somebody wants to keep my name, what
of the new person coming in? This has nothing to do with
grudges.”
And now, it looks as if Saheed is set to do something about his
threat. A reliable source informed Saturday Beats that the actor had
taken his ex to court insisting that she drop his name.
But it won't be easy as Fathia had also reportedly boasted that
nobody could stop her from using the name.
Fathia had said, “I laugh, my name is Fathia Balogun and it’s going
to remain Balogun; nobody can ever change that and nobody can stop
me from answering that name.”

Opposition to a Drunken Kleptocracy: Why We Should Join APC

Written by Dr. Peregrino Brimah
Jonathan is so bad, that he makes APC look like angels. Anyone that
is in opposition to this Jonathan’s worst government in the history of
Nigeria and perhaps the world, is labeled APC. Why bother rejecting
the label, I now accept it. Opposition = APC, I am APC then. Finish.
What more will they say? Infact, this Johnnie and his angels’ (like
Charlie and his angels) administration is so terrible… they say, good,
better, best. Or bad, badder, baddest.
This is the baddestest administration conceivable. Anything that can
get this over, now if possible, but definitely no later than 2015 is
divine. 544 days to go. Hah!
Nowadays I do not even see Jonathan anymore, who I see is
Obasanjo. It is that Obasanjo, I do not even know what to call him,
that did this to us. Fela Ransom Kuti turned in his grave when we did
the abomination of bringing that man back to power. How dumb were
we? It is not Jonathan’s fault at all; it is Obasanjo I blame for this
inebriated rubbish.
Some of his remaining 2 million supporters say; stealing did not start
today. Well, if something is bad, did our parents not teach us to try
again, and try and try again? We will put get this team out and put
the next guys and if they fail, like Egypt, no waiting full term, we will
get them out again and put the next, try and try again till we get
something better. Is this not commonsense? Is this not our obligation
to our elderly, to our young and to those who are no longer with us
due to the incompetence, recklessness and mega-corruption of this
administration?
This man we call a president. How many months after he said he
knew the sponsors of Boko Haram? He has not done his duty as
commander in chief and arrested and helped us sentence a single one
to the death they deserve? If that is not terror masterminding, then
what is? Am I the one that will arrest Boko Haram sponsors? May
God have mercy on the brave soldiers and civilians dying under this
terrible regime that protects sponsors of terror.
No cooperation with the Swiss on their invitation to join us
investigate the $7bn NNPC-Swiss oil dealers looting us silly. The
president ‘falls-ill’ and misses every important function to represent
us abroad. AU’s 50th in Addis Ababa, mba.
Investor’s summit in UK, mba. Now we even have the legitimization of
terror, with people from our nation in harmony with the government,
issuing terror threats to our neighbors for their independent and
legitimate matters of state security. Not a single arrest of a corrupt
top official. But this ‘government’ who cannot arrest Boko Haram
sponsors and cannot arrest corrupt top officials have the gumption to
threaten to use police and army against our noble teachers. Let’s not
even go through the sorry story of this state of existing under terror
leadership.
Nigerians are hopeless cowards. Thabo Mbeki said the rot that
happens in Nigeria’s government can never happen in his South
Africa, because the problem is with the Nigerian masses. I am a
revolutionist, but I have weighed my options. One must accept reality.
Option 1 is a total revolution, which can be stolen, but gives the
possibility of absolute and immediate, total change. Nigerian’s are
too busy fighting each other and defending corruption and terror, I
don’t see that happening tomorrow, and we cannot afford to wait
while people wallow in miserable destitution and more die in this
administratively terrorized nation.
Option 2 is military take-over, hoping for a Rawlings, Sankara,
Idiagbon type of guy. But the military have been bribed stupid. Our
great Southern Army General in command, who is over-term, is
sleeping. When the Northerners took over back then and ruled Nigeria
the most, people blamed the North, whereas it was a handful of
soldiers who dared to go in to help rid the nation of jackals as we
have today. Our Southern-Igbo general in charge has that opportunity,
but he does the Igbo’s and the South no honor.
I am not being tribalist here, simply cutting it as it is, raw. No one
ever voted in the North over southerners. Of our people-elected
leaders, most time in ‘peoples-choice’ leadership has been non north.
North has supported Southern candidates, well, well, including in
killed Abiola’s stolen election. The North 60% longer rule was because
they took it. Igbo-Southerner in command, take it now. Mba!
So only option number 3, which is the ‘strongest opposition.’ And if
they even put forth good candidates, perhaps we can have a slower,
but hopeful change. This is why I am APC, oh! APC is terminology for
opposition. I have not joined the party formally, but I am APC. In fact,
I am more APC than Tinubu.
When CNN’s Christian Amanpour attacked our president for lying that
the power was better, she became APC. When World Bank said the
fact that Nigeria had 100 million destitute, the number having
doubled through the Obasanjo and Jonathan administrations, they
became APC. Joel Brinkley from the US, who wrote in LA Times, “Good
luck, Mr. Jonathan. It’s time you were impeached,” he is APC fully-
fully. PDP defect to APC, it is because they were born with APC blood
type.
In fact, if Benin republic, for arresting a well known above the law
terrorist, whose boys went ahead to terrorize a whole Nigeria’s
neighbor, for a legitimate arrest, are also APC. Then who am I and
which side am I on, that I will not be APC? Where is my broom!
Ghana is suffering like Nigeria now. They, like us got the second man
as president when their president died. Now there is hardship, Ghana
cannot pay salaries while there are rumors that the inheritor of the
presidency and his family are purchasing banks and things all over.
Always look at the man behind. What if the president dies?
Obasanjo planned this. He knew it. He ‘killed’ Yar’Adua. This was his
master plan, plain and simple. And we the entire nation were all
dummies. If you are old in APC, step aside. We respect your
accomplishments; God will give you long life. Nigeria will be careful
now. Man #1 must be fit to run marathon against Ethiopia’s best
runners and man number two from now on must be an even better
candidate than man number one, no joke!

APC!!!!!! Impeachment!
APC!!!!! What the slogan is… Change!
APC!!!! Sweep those crazy baldheads outta da yard!

Why I'm Still Single Despite Everything ––BBA's Karen Igho

BBA winner, Karen Igho is really waiting patiently for her "real
husband". Below is her latest rants...
"My celebrity status attracts and it scares men away too. It
scares some because not every man can handle or understand
fame. It takes a strong and understanding man to be able to be
with a female celebrity. The attracting aspect comes from when
they just want to be with you because they want to be able to
say ‘I’ve been with Karen Igho.’ It takes God’s grace to be able
to sift the chaff from the wheat.
I’m not in any relationship at the moment because... Love is
unpredictable though; if my man comes along the way, then it is
all well and good."
I don't know why guys are ignoring this babe. Please, Lagos guys try

Read Dele Momodu's Exposé On Nyesom Wike Versus ASUU

Fellow Nigerians, permit me to make a serious confession. I had
refused to pay much attention to the activities of Mr Nyesom Wike at
the Education Ministry where he’s presently the Alpha and Omega,
after the exit of the substantive Minister, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed
Rufai. The fault is not entirely mine. Wike had succeeded in spending
more time playing politics in his home state of Rivers than sitting
down at the negotiation table with the enraged and striking Nigerian
egg-heads.
Naturally, we were mostly fascinated by the war of attrition between
the rambunctious Minister and his former boss, mentor and
benefactor, Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
What I find most intriguing was how the Federal Government led by
President Goodluck Jonathan condoned the kind of rascality going on
where a serving Minister is permitted to swim with such reckless
abandon in muddied political waters while his whole Ministry is on
fire and in dire need of desperate rescue.
Not just that, the Minister is allowed to seek his next political office
as Governor of Rivers against the kernels of rules laid down by the
President himself requesting that ambitious members of his cabinet
must resign in a jiffy or get summarily fired by him. The popular belief
is that Mr Wike has nothing to fear or worry about since he’s the
President’s Man Friday and numero uno pugilist in the battle for the
soul of Rivers where Amaechi currently holds the World Heavyweight
Boxing title.
For a fact, education is one of the biggest sufferers in Nigeria today.
Successive governments had watched the sector degenerate and
deteriorate to an abysmal level as if it was a normal occurrence. I
believe the Minister would have performed too well if he had been
assigned to Special Duties. There’s no question that he can give and
take deadly punches. He has taken on his former boss with the agility
of a lion without batting an eyelid. Therefore I’m reasonably
convinced that the man is in a wrong Ministry. Education requires
someone who’s very cerebral, elegant and sober. Such a person would
understand the eloquent use of language without sounding verbose
and delinquent. He would abuse without using expletive words.
If Wike was already crowned the King Kong of Rivers, our Minister
surpassed himself days ago as he launched a blistering attack on the
warring members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. In a
tone and demeanour reminiscent of our inglorious military era, Wike
instructed the lecturers to return to the classrooms or face immediate
sack from their academic jobs. There was no time for any form of
Diplomatese, as Wike belched fire and brimstone while addressing
newsmen.
I’m glad I personally watched the speech repeatedly on Channels
Television because I would never have imagined lecturers could be so
insulted under the regime of a former don. I was stunned to no end.
Even as I write this, I find it hard to believe that any leader or
politician would issue threats he can never enforce. It was my
unlettered mum who used to warn that no one should issue threats
that are not enforceable because if you fail you’re sentenced to
eternal shame!
Wike has inadvertently boxed himself and the government he
represents into such ignominious corner. He should have known from
time immemorial that lecturers may be materially poor they know how
to hold theirs high in the marketplace of ideas. All they possess and
guard jealously is their pride. Soldiers come, soldiers go; lecturers
always remain. They’ve survived many tyrants and will survive
aspiring dictators, no matter what. It is a fact.
Let’s now attempt a dissection of the main crux of the matter. ASUU
has been on strike for about five months and the hapless and
innocent students under their tutelage have been at home for that
long. Their parents are totally frustrated that once again Nigerian
students have become rudderless and defenceless. I must reiterate the
fact that this has never been a big deal in our long-suffering country.
It has almost become a curse to attend local tertiary institutions.
Most of those who can afford the hefty cash have abandoned our
shores to seek knowledge and certificates of all manners in nearby or
far-flung places. The reason isobvious.
Schooling in Nigeria has become tantamount to an Israelite’s journey
where a trip of 40 days stretches infinitesimally to 40 years. Rather
than fix the cruel situation, members of the privilegentsia would
rather vamoose with their children abroad and leave the poor ones to
roast in hell. But unknown to such short-sighted leaders, it is not
usually as simple as it looks.
The implications are legion but our leaders can hardly find the
wisdom to discover them. No one cares much about what happens to
those left behind. Since the children of the rich are not the ones
mainly affected by perennial closures, the schools can shut down for
as long as it takes without as much as a whimper from the highest
authorities in the land. Unfortunately, there’s no escape for the
wicked. Parents of those sent abroad are often too busy with their
primitive accumulation of wealth that they studiously forget to check
on the well-being of those kids.
The kids who ostensibly have everything at their beck and call are
always ready to spoil themselves silly from the booty provided by
their overloaded parents. In the process, these comfortable children
pick up dangerous habits and entertain themselves with perilous
indulgences. Not just that, most of these children become totally
alienated and far removed from reality back home. Many are never
able to re-integrate properly into African societal values.
These are the reasons I expected the Federal Government to go all out
to sort out the intractable problems of Education once and for all. Our
collective future is terribly at risk because of the incessant break in
our school calendar. No country has ever transformed into a First
World nation without investing a chunky part of its resources and
budget on Education. The Ministry of Education is also far too
important to be handed over to hard-core politicians who are rabidly
obsessed with acquiring and retaining power by any means necessary.
Unfortunately in our strange country, nothing is too big or highly
sensitive to be dashed out to political godsons.
The Education Ministry is one of those cash-cows considered very
lucrative for appointment seekers. It ranks among the top four very
important places to be coming only after Petroleum, Defence and
Finance. Education enjoys the lion’s share in our annual budget, yet
nothing has changed over the years because the politicians and civil
servants have perfected the art of movement without motion. I’ve sat
in a high-level gathering where we were regaled with tales of the
fabulous wealth of Educational Administrators. It was such a breath-
taking experience to discover there was so much money available to
appointees but none for the supposed beneficiaries. This is why
appointments and promotions have become matters of life and death
in our higher institutions. Merit has been sacrificed at the altar of
greed and avarice.
In all of this hocus-pocus, the regular lecturer and the students suffer
so much. The lecturer is abysmally poor. He lacks modern and
updated facilities to work with. It is a miracle that he’s able to catch
up with his counterparts elsewhere. Cambridge University, Oxford,
Harvard School and many others are better funded than many African
countries while our students are subjected to the most inferior forms
of learning at this time and age. Our universities now pitifully rank
extremely low on the world list and our certificates are largely treated
with disdain. It is for this reason that ASUU is seeking a total
overhaul of our university system. Those who think they are merely
fighting for salaries therefore miss the point.
Truth is, something drastic needs to be done to bring our universities
up to acceptable standards. The ding dong relationship between the
Federal Government and ASUU has been on for far too long. Many
heaved a sigh of relief when for the first time our country was led by a
President and Vice President who were once university dons. Poor
health did not allow President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua do much in
office. His eventual death deposited the heavy burden on the new
President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan. On January 24, 2012, a
comprehensive agreement was signed between the Federal
Government and ASUU.
But towards the middle of 2013, nothing had happened thus
necessitating ASUU to return to the trenches. A recalcitrant
government that failed to honour its agreement carried on as if all
was well. Meanwhile a government in the middle of such gargantuan
crisis still found the space and money to approve new universities, all
in the name of political consideration. The infuriated lecturers said
there was no going back until government fulfils its promises.
When it became obvious that they won’t blink, the Federal
Government swallowed its pride and top government functionaries led
by the President intervened. While it is commendable that the
President spent about 13 hours with the ASUU leadership, it is
regrettable that his agents reneged on salient points raised at the
marathon meeting on November 4, 2013. The Federal Government is
yet to pay the agreed N100bn fund for infrastructural development.
There are other areas in the MOU that would have demonstrated good
faith on the part of government and secure the revitalisation funds for
universities. Other terms sought to protect the fate of ASUU activists
against any form of victimisation but Government has refused to
endorse any of these pledges.
As if the situation was not already bad enough, Mr Wike has now
poured petrol into the raging firing by issuing threats to an apparently
determined community of teachers. My take is that the President
would be the ultimate loser and not the Minister. For a man
desperately seeking a re-election in barely over a year to come, it is a
totally wrong move. The President should do everything within his
power to stop this unreasonable decision about sacking any lecturer
that fails to return to work by December 4, 2013. I make bold to say it
is an impossible task if the lecturers decide to call his bluff. Is the
Minister going to replace university lecturers with palmwine tappers?
By what Arithmetic did he arrive at the figure that it would be easier,
quicker and cheaper to recruit new lecturers? From where does he
think these new recruits will appear?
We are talking about lecturers, senior lecturers and Professors. I guess
Wike and his cohorts would assess and appoint new ones as they see
fit in their moment of phantasmagoria. If this issue was not so
serious it would have been a rib cracking comedy of errors.
But we have seen all this shakara too many times. This too shall
pass away.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole Apologizes Over His 'Go And Die' Comment To Widow

Gov. Adams Oshiomhole has apologized for the comments he made to
a widow in Benin during an inspection tour on Mission Road, in the
state capital, a fortnight ago.
According to NAN, the Governor said he made the comments in anger
and he now regrets it.

The governor’s apology was made when the leadership of the
Federation of Muslim Women’s Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN),
paid him a courtesy visit in Benin.

He noted that though the challenge of modern times had bestowed
on the shoulders of some women and single mothers the status of
bread winners of their homes, such should not be used as an accuse
to flout the laws.

Church of England To Allow Church Blessings For Gay Couples

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York yesterday published the
Report of the House of Bishops Working Group on Human Sexuality.
And according to it, gay couples should be allowed to have their
relationships blessed in church.
DailyMail reports that the report, written by former civil servant Sir
Joseph Pilling and a team of senior churchmen and women, was
published seven months after the Church first indicated it is looking
at ‘accommodations’ for same-sex couples and four months after the
Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, told
Church leaders that ‘we must accept there is a revolution in the area
of sexuality.’

Recommendations: The report was put together by former civil
servant Sir Joseph Pelling, pictured

It signals an end to the Church’s longstanding insistence that gay
relationships are sinful and less worthy than heterosexual marriage.
And may now open the way for a reversal of the CofE’s opposition to
same-sex marriage and the eventual appointment of actively
homosexual priests and bishops
Archbishop Welby said yesterday that bishops will now ‘consider the
report and decide how such a process might best be shaped.’

Why PDP Lawmakers Who Join APC Won’t Lose Their Seats

“We have read reports that members of the National Assembly
that follow us to APC will lose their seats. This cannot happen
as it will be at variance with the relevant sections of our
Constitution and electoral laws that guarantee the safety of the
members of the National Assembly once their parent party is in
crisis as PDP is at the moment.
“For the avoidance of doubt, there is no danger of their losing
their seats as made clear by sections 68(1)(g) and 109(1)(g) of
the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as
amended) in relation to the status of members of a legislative
house (state and national) who defect from the political parties
from which they were elected to join another political party.”
This clarification was made in a statement by Chief Chukwuemeka Eze
for the faction of PDP that joined APC, in Abuja, on Thursday.
He stressed that anyone thinking that the lawmakers could lose their
seats were living in the past, adding that the Constitution of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria guaranteed freedom of association.
He said since the APC was now having the majority in the National
Assembly, the members would be covered by the Constitution, adding
that there was nothing the Bamanga Tukur-led National Working
Committee of the PDP could do to any defecting member of the PDP.

2015: Why Professor Jega Must Go ––Buhari, Akande, Tinubu

Police barricade on their way and the sun blazing above, All
Progressives Congress (APC) leaders marched on the headquarters of
the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja on Thursday.
Leading the way were former Head of State Muhammadu Buhari, APC
Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Lagos State Governor Asiwaju
Bola Ahmed Tinubu, defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) former
chairman Chief Ogbonnaya Onu and many others.
But what exactly is their mission and their demands?
They demanded the cancellation of the November 16 Anambra State
governorship election, resignation of Prof Attahiru Jega, INEC
Chairman, and dissolution of the management of the electoral body.
In a scene reminiscent of the pro-democracy struggle between 1993
and 1998 during the military era, the leaders trekked for about five
kilometrer from the APC National Secretariat in Blantyre Street, Wuse
II, Abuja to Zambezi Crescent in Maitama District where INEC is
located.
The initial stage of the trek was piloted by Ogun State Governor
Ibikunle Amosun and Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi and many
members of the National Assembly.
The “great trek” was later co-ordinated by a former National Secretary
of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change, Buba Galadima, an
engineer.
But when the procession took off, Gen. Buhari and other top leaders of
APC withstood the rigours of standing in an open lorry for the protest
march.
Waving brooms – the APC’s symbol – they brought traffic to a
standstill for about two hours on the ever-busy Ademola Adetokunbo
Street in Wuse II. Revolutionary songs blared from mounted speakers.
Many workers in the business district abandoned offices to identify
with the protesters.
They held leaflets and placards with the following inscriptions:
“Anambrarians, Nigerians are with you”; “Anambra Election: Jega, not
the INEC Messiah, Resign Now”;
“2015, No hope with Jega”; “No Supplementary Election in Anambra”;
“Cancel Anambra Election Now”;
and “Election Fraud Must Stop Now”.
The procession, which started at about 10.30pm, berthed at the INEC
headquarters at about 12.03pm.
The situation turned into a battle front with the protesters at one end
and combat ready soldiers and policemen at another end. Journalists
were left in between.
At the end of the day, their message was passed.

“Federal Government Is Just Giving Empty Threats” – ASUU Responds To Ultimatum

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on
Thursday described the threat by the federal government to
sack lecturers if they don’t return to classroom as empty
threat that could not hold water.

The union said it is vindicated that the Federal government
was not ready to implement resolutions reached with the
union.
ASUU said the threat will fail, adding that Nigerian public
universities need 60,000 lecturers due to government’s failure
to employ more capable hands into the system.
The union said federal government is wasting the time of
Nigerians youths by failing to perfect the resolutions and get
the strike suspended.
The union added it had reasons to be wary following the
failure of government to honour their promises to Academic
Staff Union of Polytechnics, resident doctors and other health
workers who have suspended their strikes.
The ASUU National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola Aremu, while
responding to the government’s directive, said the threat does
not hold water as it has confirmed the fears that the federal
government cannot be trusted.
The don said, “With the latest action, the federal government
has shown that they are not committed to all they have been
saying. We are saying that since we agreed at the meeting that
the sum of 200 billion naira is for 2012 and 2013
revitalisation, the federal government should deposit same in
the Central Bank of Nigerian. We are already in November and
December is around the corner. If they don’t do that now,
when do they want to do it? We are saying the non-
victimization clause should be included as agreed while the
renegotiation of the 2009 agreement should be included as
agreed with the presidents”.
“It is a pity if the federal government is not willing to perfect
the resolutions reached with union. This is why we find it
difficult to trust our leaders by their words. How can someone
be threatening to sack lecturers when universities are already
short-staffed by almost 60,000. We are not in military era. The
military tried it and failed. This one will fail again. They can
re-open the school. ASUU did not shut down the universities. It
was the management of the schools that ordered the students to
go back home.”

ASUU Says Jonathan Is A Joker, Insists Threat Can't End Strike

The Goodluck Jonathan administration has given the Academic Staff
Union of Universities, ASUU, one week ultimatum to call off the
ongoing strike or risk mass sack. The directive was given on Thursday
on behalf of the government, in Abuja, by the acting Minister of
Education, Nyesom Wike.
But in a swift reaction, ASUU rubbished the threat by the Jonathan
Government to sack any lecturer who fails to report back to school on
December 4, 2013. While condemning the threat, ASUU said:
“It is a pity if the federal government is not willing to perfect the
resolutions reached with union. This is why we find it difficult to
trust our leaders by their words. How can someone be
threatening to sack lecturers when universities are already short-
staffed by almost 60,000? We are not in Military era. The
Military tried it and failed. This one will fail again.”
The union added that the threat latest will not only fail but worsen
the situation and "make the strike linger more than necessary."
With this threat, ASUU said it is now very clear that the Federal
government was not ready to implement any of the resolutions it
reached with the union.

Demi Moore & Ashton Kutcher Are Finally, Legally Divorced

Nearly two years after they announced the end of their six-year
marriage, Demi Moore and ex-husband Ashton Kutcher are finally,
legally divorced.
According to TMZ, the couple's split was finalized on Nov. 26.
And the reason it took them this long was because they were
squabbling over money.
Demi had initially wanted spousal support even though she was worth
way more millions than Ashton.
She later backed off that claim... but Ashton had to give her
somewhat more than he had to before they reached a financial
settlement.

ASUU Has One Week To Call Off Strike – Wike

The Federal
Government
has given striking lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff
Union of Universities, ASUU, a one-week ultimatum to call off the
ongoing strike.
Acting Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike gave the
directive today in Abuja, while speaking with journalists.
This is coming on the heels of a statement credited to a member
of the union who dismissed the minister’s announcement on
about the union making new demands, as a blatant lie.
The lecturers had at their NEC meeting last week in Kano,
demanded that government should pay the four-month salary
arrears being owed varsity lecturers while there should be
immediate implementation of the N1.2tn offerred by the
government to public varsities, starting with the release of
N100bn this year, before the strike can be called off, a demand
the acting Minister Wike described as “outrageous”.
Nothing is binding yet, as the union is yet to meet with President
Jonathan. ASUU had said it would meet with the president on
the decisions reached at its NEC meeting before making any
announcement concerning the 5 months old strike.

TRAGIC: Girl, 17, Poisons Herself in FCT After Being Accused of Stealing by Her Sister-in-Law

A 17-year-old girl, who has been accused by her sister-in-law of
stealing N3,000 from her handbag, died in Kubwa, FCT, on
November 26, 2013, Tuesday, after taking substances suspected
to be poison.

The girl was allegedly beaten and had her hair shaved with
bottle before being stri*ped unclad by her sister-in-law at NEPA
Road in Kubwa.
A police source at Kubwa said the sister-in-law blamed the
teenager in taking her money, shaved off the girl’s hair with
broken bottles and stri*ped her unclad on the street after
torturing her.
“The woman was furious because she accused the deceased of
always pilfering from her handbag every day and out of anger,
she beat up the deceased, scrapped her head with broken bottles
and stri*ped her unclad publicly,” the source said.
According to eyewitnesses, the teenage girl, who could not bear
the disgrace, ran into the kitchen and drank what they called rat
killer as a way of proving her innocence.
The girl was said to have been taken to Kubwa General Hospital
where she was confirmed dead.
Tony Olofu, the Assistant Commissioner of the Kubwa Police
Area Commander, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect is
in police custody at Kubwa where she is being interrogated.
The case will soon be transferred to FCT Criminal Investigation
Department (CID) after the results of autopsy and other medical
reports on the deceased.

Egypt Sends 21 Women To Jail For 11 Years Over Protests

A group of
twenty-one
women have been jailed for 11 years for a peaceful protest in
Alexandria, as Egypt’s interim prime minister gave a strong
defence of a law further restricting public demonstrations.
The women, supporters of the deposed president Mohamed
Morsi, received 11-year jail sentences on Wednesday for forming
a human chain and passing out flyers earlier this month. Seven
minors among the group were remanded to juvenile detention
until they reach legal age. The youngest in the group is 15 years
old.
Six men, described by prosecutors as Muslim Brotherhood
leaders, were sentenced to 15-year terms, accused of being
members of a “terrorist organisation”.
In a news conference also on Wednesday, Hazem el-Beblawi, the
interim prime minister, defended a new law which requires
citizens to apply for permission before marching as a “necessary
step”.
“The cabinet confirms that it will apply the law fully to show its
support for the police in the face of terrorism. The law is subject
to change, but through the proper channels.”
Protesters opposed to both Morsi and the interim army-backed
government meanwhile gathered in downtown Cairo for a rally
against the law.
Unexpectedly, the interior ministry announced that it had
approved the march, even though organisers denied applying for
a permit.
The ministry said the application was submitted by the father of
Salah Ahmed Mohamed, known as “Jika”, the first protester killed
during deposed Morsi’s tenure.
Wednesday’s rally was only announced in the morning, giving far
less than the required period of notice.
The backlash against the law is the latest criticism of Beblawi’s
increasingly unpopular government. Even some supporters think
it went too far in restricting personal freedoms: Leaders of
Tamarod, the petition campaign that organised the protests that
preceded Morsi’s ouster, have criticised the law as too harsh,
and several were arrested while protesting against it on Tuesday
in the southern city of Aswan.
“They had one party against them already, the Muslim
Brotherhood,” said Magdi Hussein, a campaigner from Tamarod
who attended Tuesday’s protest. “I don’t know why they passed
this law. It will turn another group against them.” [AlJazeera]

15-year-old Boy Arrested After Setting Teacher On Fire During Class

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after he tried to set a
teacher on fire during class.
The high
school
student from Knoxville, Tennessee approached Gabriela Penalba,
23, as she had her back turned to students.
He used a cigarette lighter to set her hair and shirt alight, the
Daily Mail reports.
Other students rushed to help Ms Penalba, putting out the
flames before they could cause burns.
Police say the teenager who set the science and physiology
teacher ablaze tried to dispose of the lighter by throwing it out
the classroom window.
He then tried to flee the scene but was caught by police a short
time later.
The boy has been charged with aggravated assault and evading
arrest.
A Knox County Schools spokeswoman said Ms Penalba is a
first-year teacher at West High School.
She added that the offending student will face disciplinary action
at school.

American Bishop Disguises As Homeless Man To Teach Church Compassion

An American
bishop has
taken on the prejudices of his church congregation by dressing
up as a homeless man.
Bishop David Musselman found himself “surprised at my own
inability to have compassion” and wanted to challenge those
who were critical of others.
“Sometimes the best way to do that is through experiences that
go beyond just a talk in church,” the Mormon bishop told
Deseret News .
He wanted to see how people would react to him if were dressed
as an entirely different person.
So he contacted makeup artist Tara Starling, who with makeup,
facial hair, glasses and a beanie, transformed him into a ragged
old man.
Last Sunday Bishop Musselman attended his weekly church
service in Taylorsville, Utah, not as a preacher, but as a member
of the congregation.
He received mixed reactions. At least five people asked him to
leave the building, some gave him money, but most were
indifferent.
“Many actually went out of their way to purposefully ignore me,
and they wouldn’t even make eye contact,” he said. “Their
inability to even acknowledge me being there was very
surprising”.
Some children, however, wanted to offer him money.
“They [the children] looked to their parents to determine whether
or not that was safe, and that’s certainly something you would
expect and it’s a good thing,” Bishop Musselman said.
“Some parents completely embraced it with their children, other
parents were very, very guarded and evasive.”
Halfway through the service, Musselman asked to say a few
words before the congregation. As he received a few odd stares,
he stood before the people and thanked those for the kindness
they has showed him. He asked where the bishop was so that he
could return some of the money given to him as a token of his
appreciation.
When no one spoke, Bishop Musselman took off his wig and
glasses to reveal his true identity.
“It had a shock value that I did not anticipate,” he said. “I really
did not have any idea that the members of my ward would gasp
as big as they did.”
The experiment seems to have had a profound effect on many
people. Ms Starling said it has ignited real change in some
people’s minds.
“People are sharing that it has really touched them, and it has
caused them to think again and look at things in a different way
and maybe change their mind about the way that they treat
people and to endeavour to look beyond the face, into the heart.”
Ms Starling says being a part of the project has been a
rewarding experience.
“I used to dream … (that) the pinnacle of my career would be to
work on a film and the film would get nominated for an Academy
Award of makeup.”
But people contacting her saying, “Thank you for sharing this.
It’s changed my mind. It’s changed my heart, and it’s changed
the way that I’m living,” is worth more than all the awards in the
world, she said.
Bishop Musselman says the experience has showed him that
people have a desire to improve themselves and change their
prejudices.
“I learned that more people want to be better than I had
originally thought,” he said. “I learned that we don’t know what
happened to an individual, and so we can’t and never should try
to judge.”

Sharia Police Smash 240,000 Bottles Of Beer In Kano! (Photos)

In their latest move to put a stop to behaviour deemed 'immoral', the
Police enforcing Islamic law in Kano state on Wednesday, destroyed
240,000 bottles of beer they had confiscated from trucks coming into
the city.
According to AFP, the Sharia law enforcers called Hisbah, launched
sweeping crackdowns in Kano since September, following a state
government directive to cleanse the commercial state of “immoral”
practices.
So, on Wednesday, a large bulldozer smashed the confiscated bottles
to shouts of “Allahu Ahkbar” (God is great) from supporters outside
the Hisbah headquarters in Kano.
Kegs containing more than 8,000 litres of a local alcoholic brew
called burukutu and 320,000 cigarettes were also destroyed.
Kano’s Hisbah chief, Aminu Daurawa, at the bottle-breaking
ceremony, said he had the ardent hope this will bring an end to the
consumption of such prohibited substances. We hope this measure
will help restore the tarnished image of Kano,” said Daurawa.
The 9,000-strong moral police force works alongside the civilian
police but also has other duties, including community development
work and dispute resolution.
Alcohol is typically easy to find in Kano, including at hotels and bars
in neighbourhoods like Sabon Gari, inhabited by the city’s sizeable
Christian minority. But the Hisbah boss vowed that this was set to
change.
“We hereby send warning to unrepentant offenders
that Hisbah personnel will soon embark on an operation into every
nook and cranny of the state to put an end to the sale and
consumption of alcohol and all other intoxicants,” Daurawa said.

NastyGist Health Care: Preventing Eye Problems

EYE HEALTH CARE BY Emeafu Elvis Chibuzor

Eye
The eye is a complex and amazing organ filled with nerves, a lens,
liquid, and more. Not only does it give us the ability to see the world
around us, but it also brings that world in color, in three dimensions,
and even under low light.

There are many different types of eye disease, but many of them share
methods of prevention. Consider these tips to help reduce your risk of
eye problems.

Quit Smoking
Tobacco use is associated with just about every kind of eye disease,
including AMD, diabetic retinopathy , cataracts, and dry eye .

Get Regular Eye Exams
Starting treatment early is the best way to prevent permanent damage
from glaucoma , retinal detachment, and other diseases. People over
30 should have a dilated eye exam at least every three to five years
(more often if they are at higher risk for glaucoma). People over 60
should have one every year.

Control Blood Sugar
If you're diabetic, keeping your blood sugar level can help ward off
retinopathy.

Maintain a Healthy Weight
Obesity and health problems related to it (high blood pressure) are
associated with higher risk of AMD, glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic
retinopathy.

Take "Eye Breaks"
If working in front of a computer or doing another task that requires
long periods of visual focus, take a break and close your eyes or look
at something far away for a few seconds every 20 minutes or so to
prevent dry eye and eyestrain.

REVEALED: PDP Governors & APC Seal Power-Sharing Deal

The merger between the APC and the five of the G-7 governors is still
on course and with the way the PDP in Abuja is talking tough, the
remaining two governors may soon join the train, OluFamous.Com
gathered. The new Peoples Democratic Party said on Wednesday that
it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the All
Progressives Congress that will prevent any clash of interest in future.
According to an insider in the party: “We have agreed that the
New PDP governors would control the APC structures in their
states. For Kano and Sokoto, we will reconcile the governors and
their predecessors.”
In a report by NastyGist.Com , both sides agreed that the five PDP governors
who defected to the APC on Tuesday are now in charge of APC in
their respective states and would control the structures of APC.
The five governors are Muritala Nyako(Adamawa), Rabiu Kwakwanso
(Kano), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), and
Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto).
It was also gathered that the governors and leaders of the New PDP
would play active roles in the emergence of the APC presidential
candidate in 2015 and work together to defeat the PDP in the
elections.
With this development, I hear that the governor of Kano State is now a
major contender in the 2015 ticket.

SEE THIS: If President Jonathan Has A Drinking Problem

The Presidency is not going to confirm whether President Goodluck
Jonathan is a tippler or not; this is never going to happen. What is
sure is this: the President’s aides will shrilly deny that their boss
takes more than a glass of red wine, now and then.
This week, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity,
Dr. Reuben Abati, launched a visceral attack against purveyors of
Jonathan’s alleged habit. It was his second strike. The first time,
Abati practically swore that all the intoxicants in Aso Rock were “Red
Wine”. This instance, in response to a media report that posited that
Jonathan’s recent ill-health in London was the end-stage of a binge
indulged in during his 56th birthday bash, Abati fired off an
unnecessary diatribe, even threatening legal action.
By now, Reuben Abati should know that...
If one does not wish to be ever carpeted, the solution is to aspire to
nothingness. One should never do two things: Never, ever write and do
not be President. Insults – public and private – roll with such
undertakings. The earlier one shrugs it off with the classic speck-on-
my-shoulder pose, and faces the job one is assigned by the public to
do, the better for everyone.
Abati’s response was too much Turenchi; enough to make one wonder
if there was no truth to the report in the first place. The Yoruba say
when an elder repeatedly states, “it does not matter,” it means there
is a matter somewhere.
The matter of Jonathan’s tippling habit did not start via reports of a
“Jonathan-hating” media. I have interacted with associates that have
also interacted with Jonathan at close range and they say, indeed, he
has a blooming relationship with a certain brand of wine. The point,
however, must be made that what constitutes overdrinking, is to an
extent, subjective, especially when ethnic stereotyping impacts the
manner we sum certain predilections executed by people who have
been marked with such a behaviour.
Stereotypes are part of every cultural fabric that we cannot easily do
away with. This makes determined habits take on a higher resonance
when carried out by a member of a group we associate with particular
labels. For instance, an Akwa Ibom/Cross River woman has to
contend with the clichéd musings of indomitable coital dexterity in a
way a Yoruba woman would not. An average Igbo man bears the
burden of an image of an inordinate capitalist, driven to accumulate
material wealth by any means necessary. The Yoruba is considered
slick while the northerner (all grouped into the “Aboki” trope) is an
oaf, a terrorist or a sick mind that covets prepubescent girls.
Please note, stereotypes are not always devoid of reality but the
problem is that they turn into self-fulfilling prophecies. They lock a
people into defined cultural traits without considering individual
divergences. Anyone who does not conform to stereotypes is not seen
for their humanity but as acting out of type.
In the case of Jonathan, a man from the Niger Delta, he is easily
tagged a tippler because that is part of the stereotype of folk from
riverine homelands. But do they actually drink more than the rest of
Nigeria? We can ask breweries to give us consumption data but that
will not go far enough. The issue is not so much about how they drink
but what they are said to drink. Moonshines — a.k.a. Ogogoro , Sapele
Water, Wuru — is the stimulant associated with them. The crudeness
of this local brew — with its high ethanol concentration — is
superimposed on Niger Deltans to give a distorted picture of a crude
classless people who not only lack the refinement of high culture but
are, also, on a self-destruct mission.
At the outset of Jonathan’s Presidency, his opponent evoked this
ethnic slurring when they called him the “son of a drunken fisherman.”
The question, for me, is if Jonathan’s “Red Wine” weakness –if he
truly has one — is a problem. One side of it is that it is a character
flaw that reminds us that even presidents are human. Boris Yeltsin
was a notorious drunk yet, as a president, the sum total of his
presidency cannot be summed-up as failed. A little off-centre on the
intoxication prism is the 35th president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da
Silva. Lula left office with the highest rating of any political leader,
ever.
Before Abati picks up his pen — again, he should be glad that it is not
a charge of mental illness that was levelled against his principal.
Both the 16th and 35th presidents of the United States of America,
Abraham Lincoln and John Fitzgerald Kennedy, who were famously
celebrated last week, had bouts of manic depression. Same obtained
for the United Kingdom’s war time prime minister, Winston Churchill.
If Jonathan has a drinking problem, he would not be the first – or
last — president in the world to battle the bottle. Aso Rock’s huff-
and-puff is uncalled for because it only fuels the open-ended rumour.
It’s one of those stories –like Sani Abacha’s death by Indian
prostitutes or, Umaru Yar’Adua’s failed kidneys — that no official
rebuttal can ever displace.
The flip side of any president’s drinking problem is that it would affect
his handling of state issues. Yeltsin, when inebriated to his eyeballs,
was a one-man comedy troupe. Come to think of it, a man who
primes his own body to self-destruct could eventually put the country
on auto-destruct in a fit of bacchanal orgy. It would have been a
whole different story if Jonathan’s administration is not as rudderless
as it appears now. That is the part of the tippling tales that concerns
me.
If he has a drinking problem, then, we need to know how it affects his
judgment on national issues. Is his indecisiveness on the question of
corruption, for instance, a problem of an ethanol-addled mind? When
he said he was not going to mention the names of those who are
corrupt because he does not want to be attacked, was it him talking
or it was a bottle’d inspiration?
Besides, if we separated the drink from the man, are we going to have
a better person and a leader? In other words, can alcoholism actually
be blamed for the Jonathan administration’s shortcomings? And if
abstinence won’t make him a more effective leader, why are we even
talking about it at all?

Read Excerpts Of Bola Tinubu's Interview On AlJazeera

Nigeria’s political landscape has changed. It will change forever and
change for good. The scale and balance of power is tilting and
changing to the opposition. We are moving from imperialism to
proper democracy.
This development will start reshaping the landscape of politics in this
country forever.
Not for us only but for the generation unborn. And the future of this
country to take its position as a leader in Africa. And not just a well
populated country that is big and directionless.
Nigeria has tried in the past to achieve stable democracy. Like other
African countries, we have had our share of military rule and a bit of
democratic rule. But we are blessed with human and material
resources which have not been harnessed for the welfare of the mass
of the people in this country. The sophistication, the honesty, trust,
transparency necessary in electoral process have been absent in this
country. The balance of power is tilted in favour of the incumbency.
Nigerians have never seen a group that will have a common focus.
Put patriotism as the cornerstone of their guiding principle.
This is a party that will put people at the forefront of their cause in
participating in politics. Never has there been a group that will focus
on the welfare of the Nigerian citizenry and fight corruption and waste
in governance. There are many areas that this new APC alliance and
effort will unveil. We will ensure that we have credibility in the voting
system, the character, commitment of our people – the value that you
want to pass the torch to the coming generation on democracy. It is
very important that we are able to do that. Otherwise, it will turn out
that election after election, confidence in the electoral process will
drop and we don’t want that to happen. For us, it’s a new beginning.
It’s a new hope. It’s a new commitment.
The perception alone of having so many governors working together in
one party and platform will encourage people to share ideas, share
values and encourage them to put their confidence in the electoral
system to change the process and make sure one man, one woman ,
one vote should be the order of the day. I think the equilibrium that is
shifting will rekindle the expectation of the observing world that
opposition is not only existing on paper but that it is physically
present in Nigeria and that they are working hard to gain power in an
honest and peaceful manner. It will strengthen the confidence of other
democratic observers around the world.
Nigeria in responding to this development must realise that help is
here. Hope is here. That we will represent them effective to engender
true democracy in the country. That their vote will count. That the
nation will be represented by the leadership that can be trusted. And
if we trust our leaders and encourage them for not breaking promises,
they we will develop faster, and we have honesty and transparency in
governance, we will eliminate mediocrity - we will be able to focus on
developing our country.
This is a blessed nation with human and material resources and we
should be able to harness these resources for the greatest interest
and number of our people. They believe in one power mandate of a
particular political party has systematically encouraged corruption,
lack of care, lack of focus on the primary things that will develop this
country. Nigeria is a talented country. Nigeria is a well educated
nation, well endowed country- but we keep missing the bull’s eye in
the critical path to a democratic success. Unless you have that, you
cannot have meaningful development and be competitive around the
world.
Help is here. It is now. The change we desire will occur.

Comedian Julius Agwu sues Etisalat for N100m over blocked line

We are solicitors to Mr. Julius Agwu, one of Nigeria's most

Our client is the owner of the Etisalat GSM phone number
08189555555, which he uses as his business line. On the 8th of

same could not connect. Not only could he not make calls, he
also could not receive calls on the said GSM line. This continued
for some days until he got a message that his line had been

client successfully answered the security questions put to him, he was
informed that his line had been restored, but the credit balance on the
line was not returned.
Surprisingly, our client's aforestated line was blocked again after he
left your said Abuja office. Once again our client visited your office at
the local wing of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Ikeja,
Lagos to lodge a complaint, but painfully, nothing was done about it.
However, after sometime, our client was invited for a meeting at your
head office in Lagos on the 14th of November, 2013 which he duly
honoured. Present at the meeting (in addition to the officials of your
organization) was Mr. Mobolaji Okusaga, the Managing Director of
The Quadrant Company, in his capacity as media agents/managers
for Etisalat Nigeria.
At the end of the meeting, our client was told for the umpteenth time
that they would get back to him, which they again failed to do.

LOSS OF BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES
It cannot be over emphasized that your actions of unlawfully blocking
and/or swapping our client's line occasioned loss of business
opportunities to him. As you are aware, our client as one of the most
sought after Nigerian entertainers needs his phone line to be easily
accessible to keep his business going. It therefore goes without
saying that our client has lost some business opportunities as a
result of your actions.

TAKE NOTICE that we have our client's firm instruction to demand
and hereby demand the sum of N100,000,000.00 (One Hundred
Million Naira) as compensation for the loss of business opportunities
and the inconvenience caused our client by reason of your unlawful
and unjustified blocking and/or swapping of our client's Etisalat GSM
phone line.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that in the event that you fail, refuse or
neglect to accede to our above stated demand within seven (7) days
from the receipt of this letter, we shall be compelled to set in motion
against you, all legal machineries necessary to obtain legal remedy
for our client.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

FESTUS KEYAMO, ESQ.
