Eku Edewor Speaks On Romance

The Nigerian men I have dated have been very romantic; I guess it
depends on the type of man one attracts and also what one deems
romantic. Know whom you’re with, some guys don’t want to say
cheesy things and look into your eyes but they will always make sure
your happiness comes first. Not everything has to be a large
“romantic” gesture. Romance has to do with being selfless. Simple
things like, choosing to stay with your girlfriend all weekend watching
movies instead of being at the clubs all weekend with the boys is
romantic; others are sending flowers for no reason at all, surprise
dinners, heartfelt messages. If your partner really knows you and loves
you, he’ll find ways to be romantic and find ways to make you happy.
I actually find Nigerian guys far more active and good when it comes
to making large romantic statements. A tip to guys, flowers always
makes women happy, even if they say they don’t love flowers. They
probably do and if sending chocolates with cards is what your lady
wants, it really won’t hurt or take much time."

Anyone Who Says I Am Bleaching Is Silly! Ex-Gov. Alao Akala Fires back At Reporter

A lot of people have said the former Governor is bleaching. In this
new interview, a Punch reporter asked him if he was bleaching, and
the former Governor, said, write it there that I said you are silly. Did
you know me when I was black? I don’t know what gave people that
impression, he said angrily. Find part of the interview below.
You talked about quality, is it in terms of your dressing too?
In terms of everything, Akala is a man of quality. Look at me, I am a
man of quality, with due respect. I use quality materials.
Is the use of jewellery part of it too?
Yes, I have been using jewellery as a young man.
Do you know what they called Ghana before, Gold Coast. I lived in
Ghana and that was where I got used to it early in my life. We make
statement with our looks in Ghana.
In those days when we were in Ghana, your wife bathed you and took
care of you.
I am from Ghana, so I have been using jewellery (he sends for an
album). I want to show you some pictures. Pictures that I took some
40 years back, you would see chains on my neck. Look at my hand
chains and rings in this picture. That is how I was brought up.
Even when I was in (police) uniform, I wore my chain with my uniform.
Is it part of your own fashion to bleach?
Bleach? That is stupidity; you are asking a very silly question, how
can I bleach? You are very silly to ask that question. What do you
mean by that? What gave you that impression?
(He pulled up his clothe and singlet to show his fair complexion.)
Is this bleaching? Have you seen the cream that I use that makes me
bleach or did you know me when I was black? So if you want to write
that, put it there that I said you are very silly to ask me that kind of
question.
Don’t ask that kind of question again.
What you don’t know; you ask. You don’t even know my parents. Is
my wife complaining or my children? I don’t know what gave anybody
the impression that I bleach.
You don’t know me; do you know what it takes to bleach?
Does your wife still bathe you?
She can’t carry me anymore; we are old. Don’t forget that the First
Lady is not my first wife. My first wife is an old woman like me and
she is still with me. She was also brought up in Ghana and that’s why
I was able to marry her. Most of the people in Nigeria cannot keep up
with my lifestyle of cleanliness.

The First Lady Wants Us To Address Her As 'Mama Peace'

On Friday, while inaugurating the Subsidy Reinvestment and
Empowerment Programme Maternal and Child Health otherwise known
as MAMA Project, The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan said she
should no longer be called Patience but “Mama Peace.”
According to her, “My name is no more Patience but now Mama
Peace because I believe that without peace, there will be no more
women, no more children and no more health sector. Without peace,
the international community will be afraid to come and invest in our
country. Peace is from the heart and not from the tongue or lips; not
what you say but what is in you. We pray for genuine peace because
peace is the key to our arriving at our desired destination as a
nation”.

In Defense Of Obasanjo's Explosive Letter To Jonathan

Let me be clear and very clear - Former President Olusegun Obasanjo
in my opinion has his hand in Nigeria’s proverbial cooking jar.
Undoubtedly, as it is becoming obvious daily, history will judge him
for his role in Nigeria’s political quagmire and economic quandary.
Nigerians are all too aware of what transpired from the ignominious
regime of IBB to the current lack luster government of GEJ.
Nigerian unborn will tell you that our beloved country has not been
very lucky with visionary and revolutionary leaders that can change
the status quo of incompetence, low expectation, financial
misappropriation and rapacious greed.
Every Nigerian knows what is killing us as a nation and a people and
can very well articulate it!
In the last couple of days as OBJ’s open letter to GEJ hit the
newsstand, majority of Nigerians characteristically resurrected out of
their cocoon and blasted OBJ in one form or fashion. Rightly so, they
expressed their opinions. If OBJ is wise enough, he would take some
time to read the reactions of Nigerians and gauge the legacy he has
left behind. Maybe he still has some time for redemption!
In his article “Jonathan's 'Killer Squad' And Obasanjo's Amnesia-
Letter from the Pot to The Kettle” Kayode Ogundamisi wrote:
“Obasanjo is that man who betrayed every known good cause, he his
the cunning fox that would arrive when a war had been won and claim
victory, when it comes to 'playing both sides' OBJ is the master of the
game. Here is a man who punished his Yoruba people for
democratically rejecting his candidacy knowing fully well how evil he
could be…..Obasanjo will go down in Yoruba history as an 'akotileta' a
traitor and no matter what others see him for, a real Yoruba would
always place him in the darkest side of our history”.
Chido Onumah in his article “Obasanjo’s ‘Satanic’ Letter” said
(referring to OBJ) “in his warped thinking, Obasanjo must have
reasoned that his only option was to foist on Nigerians the very worst
amongst us; people so inept and incapable that after a while we’ll be
hankering after Obasanjo. Looking back now, that theory has worked
well as Nigerians now look with nostalgia at the Obasanjo era….But
we can say the same and even more about the two Obasanjo’s
administrations, 1976-1979 and 1999-2007.
"Obasanjo seems to have forgotten too soon his squabble with his
deputy, Atiku Abubakar, that made nonsense of governance, the
political assassinations (including that of Bola Ige, his attorney
general and minister of justice) during his macabre rule, the
massacres in Odi and Zaki Biam. The less said about corruption (who
could forget the wholesale pillage of our patrimony in the name of
privatization) the better. Obasanjo laid the foundation on which
President Jonathan is building and consolidating. He is acting out
the PDP playbook.”
On the other hand, there are few Nigerians that still hold very
favorable view about OBJ for his role in aggressively canvassing for
foreign investments in Nigeria, opening Nigeria’s ICT market, and the
way and manner he managed the Islamic north agitations for Sharia
laws. To these Nigerians, OBJ left something that Nigerians are
enjoying today knowingly or unknowingly.
After three days of archiving the OBJ’s letter in my hard drive, I
decided to sit down and read line by line so I can form an educated
opinion. My intention here is not to take sides but to think outside
the box.
I will let Nigerians judge the issues OBJ raised in his letter. However, I
like to state unequivocally that I respect OBJ for having the courage
to write such a letter to GEJ. To me, it shows he’s a man who is bold
enough to express his views without fear or favor. Such boldness is
hard to find among Nigeria political class and citizenry. While the
others were expressing their views behind close doors (not to offend
the new king on the block from giving them “food”), like Nike advert,
OBJ did it!
Like the letter I wrote to Governor Oshiomhole on November 16th,
2012 widely published online titled “An Open Letter to Governor
Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole of Edo State” I like this letter because it is
good for Nigeria. It is high time that those that are occupying the
highest position of power in the country started to scrutinize one
another. It is part of the democratic process and has a tendency to
keep them in check. It is same reason that most American politicians
try to stay as clean as possible. Because too many eyes watching
them are ready to dig out their dirty linen and display it in public.
Checks and balance in government 101!
My expectation is that GEJ should also display his patriotism for
Nigeria and manly prowess by writing OBJ to express his views. There
is nothing wrong with having divergence of opinion about issues
affecting the nation. There are times one cannot help but love
America. I am enthralled when Americans will look into the eye ball of
their president (whoever) and say with grace and civility “I disagree
with you Mr. President because……”
With all the accusations against OBJ coming from the political elite
after he wrote his letter, I was wondering why they were not men
enough to publically do the same to OBJ while he was running the
country? I am just thinking here. To me, it shows they are bunch of
self-serving mama’s boys.
In fact, if APC is not full of same recycled political milksops, they
should be looking for all the dirty linens of PDP and displaying it for
the Nigerian people to see.
Also, if PDP wants to show that they are not political cowards and
namby-pambies, they should go after all the “bad bad things” APC
party is doing against Nigeria people and present them in Nigeria’s
public domain. Nigerians know that looting is the only thing that
binds both party members together.
Please Nigerians pray and encourage them to write one another. They
know where all the money went and its going. They know who
supplies the arms to terrorist, kidnappers and political thugs. When
all the letters are in, it will help us to prosecute them and hold them
accountable.
Thank you OBJ for writing the second letter. I am waiting for GEJ’s
letter, Tinubu’s letter, IBB’s letter, Atiku’s letter, Buhari’s letter and all
the others. 2014 should be the year of letters for them. May God
bless Nigerians and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Jonathan Puts Together A "Robust" Reply To Obasanjo's Letter

Despite their meeting over breakfast in Kenya on Friday, President
Goodluck Jonathan has take up his pen and paper and he is putting
together what inside sources say is a "robust reply" to Chief Olusegun
Obasanjo.
First, the Presidency is in panic mood as to how Obasanjo got some
of the information he disclosed his his long letter because they are
top secret and it is believed that some aides to President Jonathan
will be sacked in a bid to cover all leakages. The next line of action
now is to deny some of the weighty revelations...
Presidential aides saddled with the responsibility of compiling a
response to the letter met again for hours inside the Presidential Villa
in Abuja on Friday. Those who met included the Special Adviser to the
President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak; Senior Special Assistant
to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe; Senior Special
Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Umar
Sani.
A source told Punch that, “The aides will present their work to the
President over the weekend. By the time he goes through it and make
corrections, the response may be ready any time next week.”
Recall that in his strong-worded letter, Obasanjo had accused
President Jonathan of pursuing “selfish personal and political
interests based on advice from his self-centred aides.”
He also alleged that the President had failed to deliver on his
promises to Nigerians and to curb insurgency and corruption in the
country.
“Nigeria is bleeding and the haemorrhage must be stopped,” Obasanjo
warned Jonathan.

How This Nollywood Actress Was Sent To Prison Over Stealing

This is a case that should serve as a big lesson to others. Nollywood
actress, Yetunde Akilapa was arrested in February for allegedly being
in possession of 100 master key, which she was accused of stealing.
She was held in custody but was later released after a court
discharged and acquitted her. In a recent chat with a report, Yetude
who is now trying to get her groove back reveals what really
happened:
There is a rumour that you were set up by your friends, how true is
this?
Yes, it’s true. Some of my friends set me up.
Why did they do that to you?
Let me narrate everything to you from the beginning. I am into
business, I sell weave-ons. I learnt hairdressing before joining acting,
it was just that I had no time for the business because of my acting
career. I used to have a salon at Bariga area of Lagos State, but I left
the place for a friend, Titi, who is a cousin to my boyfriend, Wale. The
only thing I didn’t give her was the weave-ons in the shop. I told her
to sell them, and that she should give the money to my younger
sister, who lives near the shop. However, she refused to deliver the
money she made from the sales to my sister. I later went there to pick
up all my things in the shop and requested for my money.
To my surprise, she claimed that there was no money with her
because a lot of people owed her. An argument ensued between her
and my sister, which resulted into a fight during which she stabbed
my sister. I reported the matter to the police, who arrested and
detained her. Her cousin, who was my boyfriend, and others were
against me over the action and pleaded with me to withdraw the case
from the police, which I later did.
So, how did the set up happen?
There was a woman I met at Next Salon at Akoka, Lagos, who liked
what I sell. I told her I could do home delivery. We exchanged
numbers and she gave me her address. She stays at Fola Agoro,
which is near my place at Bariga all in Lagos. One day, I decided to
visit her at home. On getting to the place she gave as her residence,
the place was quiet as I didn’t see anyone outside. I knocked on the
door and someone came out to attend to me. But when I asked to see
the woman, who told me she is called Mama Ayo, the lady that
attended to me claimed there was nobody like that in the place. The
woman thereafter called other tenants and accused me of being an
informant because she said they had robbed the house in December
2012, and this incident happened in March. They ransacked me and
found a bunch of keys on me, which has about 15-20 keys. They
claimed they were master keys I used for robbery.
They later took me to the police station and I was detained. My
boyfriend and his cousin later got to know about my ordeal They later
testified at the police station that I was an actress and a bail was to
be arranged for me to get out of the station but it didn’t end there.
The police later came to tell me that my house would be searched in
the afternoon. The police that searched my house reported back to
the DPO and presented the receipts to him.
At the DPO’s office, a guy interrogated me and introduced himself as
a PM. I thought he was a Production Manager, but unknown to me,
he was a journalist from PM News. It was later I got to know about
this. He was the one that reported in the media that I was sent to
Kirikiri Prison for robbery. After leaving the DPO’s office, I was told
that I would be charged to court. Three days after, I was charged to
court.
But how did you come about the 100 bunch of keys?
This was the handiwork of the journalist that broke the story. Let me
tell you something, Titi dated the DPO because of my matter. I later
got to know the whole truth of the matter later. I would have rot in
jail but God helped me out. She was jealous of how I get money to do
some things.
Do you still relate with Titi?
Never, such a person should not be mingled with at all because she is
a dangerous element.

Obasanjo and Jonathan In Secret Meeting

The heat is on and the only way out is to beg ex-President Olusegun
Obasanjo not to make more revelations on what is going on in the
corridors of power so as to continue to keep Nigerians in the dark on
issues.
Consequently, President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday met behind
closed doors with Chief Obasanjo in the Intercontinental Hotel in far
away Nairobi, Kenya. The meeting held less than 24 hours after an
18-page letter Obasanjo sent to Jonathan went public and is still
generating a lot of serious reactions.
Obasanjo had in the letter accused Jonathan of condoning corruption
and engaging in acts that were capable of destroying the country.
Two of them were in Kenya for the country’s 50th independence
anniversary. Before the event, Obasanjo had made a surprise
appearance at Jonathan’s hotel on a day the media were awash with
his strong-worded letter titled “Before it is too late .”
Some of those who had insulted Obasanjo, including Reuben Abati,
were shocked to see the same Obasanjo and Jonathan having
breakfast, chatting and smiling.
A top source told NastyGist.Com that Jonathan later apologized to
Obasanjo for not replying his previous letters to him and promised to
change. He also assured the ex-President that he is still loyal to him,
no matter what some of those working under him may say about
Obasanjo.

See Fani-Kayode's Reaction to Obasanjo's Letter to Jonathan

Many Nigerians have been reacting to the strongly-worded letter.
Read Fani-Kayode's take below:

OBJ has finally closed GEJ's chapter with his letter.

Jonathan is
finished - mark my words . Abati should shut up and let his boss
speak for himself on this one.

The Ebora Owu has spoken and the issues that he has raised are
too serious to be ignored or to be responded to with amatuerish
and cheeky insults and slurs from a mere staff of the Presidency.

The President should find the courage to personally answer the
charges...

And address the message rather than get his aides to attack the
messanger. As Baba said, Jonathan is "bleeding Nigeria to
death". It is time for change.

God used Obasanjo to put Jonathan in power and, by His grace,
He will use that same Obasanjo to remove him.

Saved By the Bell Drops Some Knowledge

So I'm enjoying my snow-free snow day and I'm watching some
Saved By the Bell because WHY WOULDN'T I? I'm watching
Home For Christmas, Part 1 (Season 4, Episode 24 - GOOD
MORNING MISS BLISS COUNTS) and Saved By the Bell is
throwing down some real truth.
In this scene, Zack is trying to woo Laura, who he met in the
food court, and things are going well (because that Zack is a
ladykiller!), until the homeless man that Zack met in the
bathroom (Spoiler alert: it's Laura's dad! But the point still
stands) walks by and waves. The next exchange is a fantastic bit
of awesomeness rarely seen in SBTB:

Zack: I gave him some money; I just hope he spends it on
food.

Laura: What do you mean by that?

Zack: Well, you know, when you give a guy a handout, you
can't be sure if he's really hungry, or a wino, or worse.

(chuckles) So, pick you up at 12:30?
Laura: Forget it. I just lost my appetite.

You go, Laura.

6-Year Old Boy Suspended From School For Sexual Harassment

A 6-year-old boy near Colorado Springs, Colorado, was suspended
from school for kissing a girl on the hand. You read that correctly.
"It was during class," first-grader Hunter Yelton said in an interview
with CNN affiliate KRDO. "We were doing reading group, and I leaned
over and kissed her on the hand. That's what happened."
Not only did Hunter's peck get him suspended from school, but the
school accused him of sexual harassment, KRDO reported.
Hunter's mom, Jennifer Saunders, is outraged.
"This is taking it to an extreme that doesn't need to be met with a 6-
year-old," Saunders told KRDO. Now my son's asking questions, 'What
is sex, mommy?'"
She said Hunter had problems at school before, getting suspended for
rough-housing and for kissing the same girl on the cheek. The family
has been working with him on "class disruptions" by grounding him
and giving him "big restrictions," Saunders said.
Robin Gooldy, the superintendent of Cañon City Schools, told KRDO
that Hunter's record will remain within the district and that his
behavior fits the school policy description of sexual harassment,
which includes unwanted touching.
"Our main interest in this is having the behavior stop because the
story is not just about the student that was disciplined, it is also
about the student receiving the unwanted advances," Gooldy told
HLN. "We have to think about both students in the situation."
Saunders said the girl in question was "fine with it" because Hunter
and the girl consider themselves "boyfriend and girlfriend." She wants
her son's record cleared of anything suggesting sexual harassment.
"Remove it from his record," she told KRDO. "I need to stand up and
fight for him. I can't just let that happen because it's not the case.
It's not what happened at all."
Hunter for his part said he feels "sorry" for doing something wrong
and tries to be good in school.
"But I just have a lot of energy. Six-year-olds, they have a lot of
energy," Hunter said.
They sure do, and as a parent of a 6-year-old and a 7-year-old, an
innocent peck on the cheek or on the hand seems as natural for kids
this age as declarations of who they plan to marry.
They don't know anything about sex or sexual harassment. So how on
earth can they be accused of such behavior?
Reaction online to Hunter's story has been swift, with the majority of
commenters expressing pure outrage.

BIG TROULE: Five Lawmakers To Impeach Amaechi

Reminiscent of the July 9 fracas on the floor of Rivers State House of
Assembly, Port Harcourt, the dissident 6 lawmakers opposed to
Governor Rotimi Amaechi with the barking of powerful forces in Abuja
are set to sit to begin impeachment proceedings against governor.
It was learnt last night that the impeachment was not targeted at
only Amaechi, who is the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum
(NGF), his deputy, Tele Ikuru, is also to be removed.
The sitting will be presided over by a crony of First Lady Patience
Jonathan and the self-acclaimed Speaker of the Rivers Assembly,
Evans Bipi, who represents Ogu/Bolo Constituency, and according to
investigation, he will be made the acting governor, after removing
Amaechi and and his deputy. This is crazy!
The anti-Amaechi lawmakers, to be backed by policemen and the
Armed Forces, will first declare vacant the seats of the 25 legislators
loyal to the NGF chairman and to be accused of defecting to the
opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers loyal to the Presidency and the acting Minister of
Education, Nyesom Wike, are Bipi, Michael Okechukwu Chinda (Obio/
Akpor II constituency), Kelechi Godspower Nwogu (Omuma), Martins
Amaewhule (Obio/Akpor I), Victor Ihunwo (Port Harcourt III) and
Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, the Chief Whip (Andoni).
The anti-Amaechi legislators are basing their decision to sit today on
yesterday’s judgement of the Federal High Court (FHC), Abuja,
presided over by Justice Ahmed Mohammed, which declared as
unconstitutional, the taking over of the Rivers House of Assembly by
the National Assembly.
The Deputy Speaker of the Rivers Assembly, Leyii Kwanee, a lawyer,
however, said that Amachree remained the Speaker of the Assembly,
stressing that illegality, impunity and lawlessness would not be
condoned.
Kwanee assured that the 25 lawmakers would soon sit, but there
must be adequate security, to prevent a repeat of July 9 and 10
fracas and confrontation in the Rivers Assembly.

Oprah Winfrey: Why I Never Wanted to Raise Children

"If I had kids, my kids would hate me. They would have ended up
on the equivalent of the Oprah show talking about me; because
something in my life would have had to suffer and it would've
probably been them.
Gayle was the kind of kid who, in seventh grade home ec class,
was writing down her name and the names of her children. While
she was having those kind of daydreams, I was having
daydreams about how I could be Martin Luther King."
First African-American female billionaire, one of the richest women on

with The Hollywood Reporter.
Winfrey, at 14 gave birth to a baby who only lived for a number of
weeks.
Gayle is her best friend and is a mother of two.

Why Husbands Beat Their 'Troublesome' Wives?

I know domestic violence is an affliction that many women face in
their marriages today. I also know that behind the façade of a blissful
and happy marriage that most women portray in the public lurks the
horror of a violent and sadistic husband. For many of these women,
violent abuse by their husbands is their worst kept secret. For many
of these women, marriage has become bondage - a trap to keep them
subjugated.
But they must keep up appearances and endure a violent husband
because the society frowns at divorce. For most women who are
victims of violence, the thought of their home fills them with horror.
The sight of their husbands makes their heart jump. It is a
nightmarish dream they wished would end soon. But they are too
horrified and traumatised to leave.
In the last few days, reports of some mind-boggling tales of domestic
violence have left me in shock. Spousal violence has also led me into
asking some hard questions about a scourge that is turning many
Nigerian women into endangered species.
A few questions come to mind as I searched for answers to this
terrible scourge. Why do some men batter their wives? Is it right to hit
a woman whom the man had sworn to love and cherish? What could
make a man hit a woman that cannot be settled amicably? Is violence
in marriage a way to resolving dispute? Why do women stay with men
who cause them trauma and injuries through constant battering? Are
men who beat up their wives insane or psychologically unstable? Is
woman battering hereditary?
These questions have become necessary when one considers the rate
of domestic violence in many Nigerian homes today. There is no need
looking any further to confirm that women are being abused daily by
their husbands. On a daily basis, news of domestic violence continues
to grab the headlines-some have led to maiming, physical
incapacitation and even death. But those are the ones in the public
domain. The other category of domestic violence is those we don’t
hear about. But they do happen anyway. They occur in homes where
the women have been so traumatised that they could not bring
themselves to reporting to the authorities or the media for the fear of
their abusive husbands.
Domestic violence also cuts across social divide. It is perpetrated by
even the elite-be it political, social, and economic and the well-
heeled. There have been cases where even so called “men of God’’
turn their wives into punching bags. Recently, a case of domestic
violence which was brought to the attention of a court in Lagos
caught my attention. The victim had narrated how she had been a
victim of perennial battering from her husband in their 10 years old
marriage. The woman had confessed how she had been the victim of
vicious beatings from her husband. As I read the story, the part that
left me in shock was when she revealed how her husband had
battered her even while pregnant. At another time she said, with tears
flowing, how she endured many miscarriages because of constant
beatings. It was horrifying. She said her husband beat her even while
nursing their baby. The judge, who found it hard to believe her story,
asked the reason behind her violent beatings. The reasons were
flimsy.
According to her, she could be battered if his meal was not on time.
She could be beaten during a simple argument or over the choice of
television channel. She said her husband once got angry and beat her
to stupor on a day his favourite English Premiership team lost! The
husband who could not offer any cogent explanation for his constant
fit of rage only begged her for forgiveness. But the woman who had
found her voice was adamant in asking for a divorce.
I thought she should have quit the marriage a long time ago. Why
stay in an abusive marriage? I have personally witnessed another
case of brutality a woman suffered in the hands of her violent
husband. For all the years I had known the couple, the woman was
constantly in and out of hospital because of the beatings she received
from her violent husband. At first, the recluse couple kept it as a
secret but it soon became public knowledge when she suffered broken
bones after she was thrown down from the staircase and almost broke
her neck. Surprisingly, she never left her husband in spite of entreaties
from friends and neighbours.
Cases of spousal abuse have become rampant in recent times. It is
also prevalent among unmarried couples. Boys are used to beating up
their girlfriends. These young women are often too vulnerable to stand
up to their abusive men. They have accepted it as the norm. Once it
was reported how a man beat up his wife and in his fit of jealous rage
poured acid on her. In Akwa Ibom State, one man dealt a heavy
machete blow on his wife on the allegation that she was unfaithful.
Now, the question I have often asked is what punishment should be
meted out to the man if he was the one found to be unfaithful? I
guess it’s a man’s world around here. Domestic violence has also
bordered on the extreme.
The celebrated case of one Gbenga Arowolo who was alleged to have
stabbed his banker wife to death in 2011 has reached its climax in a
Lagos court. The statistics have also shown that husband-on-wife
violence is endemic. According to the United Nations Population
Fund, about 50 per cent of women are said to have been battered by
their husbands. Intriguingly, most educated women (65 per cent) as
compared to their low income counterpart (55 per cent) are being
abused. A staggering 95.2 per cent of abused women in Nigeria do
not report cases of domestic violence. The law has also failed to
protect women against domestic violence. For example, only Ebonyi,
Jigawa, Cross Rivers and Lagos states have signed the Violence
against Women, Prevention, Protection and Prohibition Bill into law.
Another form of violence is matrimonial rape. This is not even
recognised by the laws in Nigeria as of today and there is no talk
about it. How can a man who during courtship promised to cherish
and take care of his woman turn her tormentor? At what point does a
marriage degenerate into a free-for-all? At what point does love take
flight and is replaced by hate and violence? It is strange how a man
can hit a woman so violently as to maim her. One intriguing factor in
this domestic violence issue is the way in which the victims are so
powerless that they cannot resist or quit. Some victims will also stay
in the marriage in the hope that the man will change. Some will even
hide their injuries from friends and family. Some have even defended
their violence husband. I have also heard excuses while women
cannot quit their violent husbands. I consider these excuses lame and
weird.
The family, church, friends and the victims themselves all share the
blame. There is no excuse that can justify hitting another human
being, let alone one’s wife? There is also no excuse to justify why a
woman should remain with an abusive husband. The excuse that the
children will suffer or that the dominant religions frown at divorce will
not suffice. It also does not matter what the society feels about
divorce. Who feels it knows it. Why live with a violent husband if you
will end up maimed, blinded, incapacitated or even dead?
For me, no marriage is worth the trouble when violence has replaced
love. Now, a word of advice for the abusive husbands and boyfriends
reading this, it is a mark of cowardice to hit any woman. It is also a
sign of insanity. You may have to get your heads examined. For the
abused wife, I know that you have been told that marriage is for
‘’better and for worse.’’ But the Biblical injunction does not include
violence. Leave that abusive husband now before death does you part.

President Jonathan Reacts To Obasanjo's Exposé

President Goodluck Jonathan has admitted that he received a
strongly-worded letter from his Oga at the top, ex-President Olusegun
Obasanjo, over recent developments in the country but he is not
happy about it.
The Presidency, while reacting to the letter written by Obasango
accusing Jonathan of betraying the mandate of Nigerians who voted
him to power, said through Reuben Abati, Special Adviser to the
President on Media, that the letter is unbecoming, mischievous and
provocative.
Obasanjo accused Jonathan point-blank of pursuing selfish, tribal and
personal interests based on the advice he received from the
unpatriotic aides. Below is the statement from the Presidency:
"We have noted the publication on several websites today of a
letter recently written by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to President
Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
"We however find it highly unbecoming, mischievous and
provocative that a letter written by a former Head of State and
respected elder statesman to President Jonathan has been
deliberately leaked to the mass media in a deplorable effort to
impugn the integrity of the President and denigrate his
commitment to giving Nigeria the best possible leadership.
"While many patriotic, objective and well-meaning Nigerians
have already condemned the leaked letter as self-serving,
hypocritical, malicious, indecent, and very disrespectful of the
highest office in the land, President Jonathan has directed that
none of his aides or any government official should join issues
with Chief Obasanjo over it."
“The President himself will, at the appropriate time, offer a full
personal response to the most reckless, baseless, unjustifiable
and indecorous charges levied against him and his
administration by the former Head of State.”
Meanwhile, a cross section of Nigerians have praised Obasanjo for
speaking the bitter truth to Jonathan.

Finally ASUU Signs Agreement With FG, Calls Off Strike

Technically, the ASUU strike has come to an end as government has
finally done the needful...
The Federal Government and the leadership of ASUU led by its
President, Dr. Nasir Fagge, has signed the much talked about
Memoradum of Understanding on the restructured 2009 Agreement, on
Wednesday.
ASUU President, Dr. Fagge said the document signed would be
presented to the union to take an affirmative and positive stand on
the suspension of the 5 months old industrial action. He said with
the signing of the MOU the 5month old strike would come to an end
in approximately one week from now...
In the words of the ASUU President:
"This is the response to the letter we wrote to Mr. President and this
document would now be forwarded to our members and our members
would give us direction. We are hoping that we would be able to meet
with our members in less than a week.
"I don’t have the power to call off the industrial action, it is only our
members that can do that. And our members gave us a message to
give to the Federal Government which we have done and within one
week our members would meet. We already have the document which
shows that Government is committed”.
The ASUU President said the development and revitalization of
Nigeria’s education sector is for our benefit.
“It is never too late for the nation to turn a new leaf and do what is
right. Other countries that are smaller and less powerful than Nigeria
have done it and have succeeded. It is rather unfortunate that Nigeria
is not close to some of these smaller nations around us. It is now, we
must properly fund our universities, we have lost lot of capital to
nations like Ghana and Togo”, Fagge said.
He therefore assured Nigerians that ASUU would not take long in
ensuring that the right thing is done.

I Can Now See That APC Will Defeat PDP In 2015 ––Says PDP Governor Sule Lamido

The broom revolution that the APC represents in Nigeria is sweeping
across the land like a tornado. One of the governors who said he
doesn't think the PDP can lose the Presidency in 2015 has now
changed his stand.
Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State has predicted that the All
Progressives Congress (APC) is set to take over the leadership of
Nigeria in 2015, as the lingering crisis in the ruling Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) continues to provide opportunities of
advancement for the leading opposition party.
“PDP has been misbehaving and if it continues to misbehave in
this way, the APC would take over the country in 2015. I now see
the wisdom in the formation of the APC. Since the PDP is really
misbehaving, the party will give PDP a good fight in the
forthcoming election.”
Governor Lamido said that with the formation of APC democracy had
been made more vibrant in the country. He made the declarations on
Tuesday while receiving the leadership of the Kano and Jigawa
chapters of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) who paid
him a courtesy visit.
It is strongly believed that Lamido and a few other PDP governors
may soon dump the party for the APC.

Tambuwal Is Correct About Jonathan's Insincerity On Corruption ––Ribadu, APC, Others

The All Progressives Congress, the Campaign for Democracy, the
Human Rights Agenda Network and the pioneer Chairman of the
EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, on Tuesday told President Goodluck
Jonathan to see the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu
Tambuwal’s criticism of his administration’s anti-graft war as a
wake-up call, rather than attack his personality.
“Tambuwal and President Jonathan belong to the same political
party, but this did not deter the speaker from rising above crass
partisanship when the issue involved borders on national
interest.
“This is the stuff of good leadership. Tambuwal has shown that
he is indeed the Speaker of the House of Representatives and
that the entire country is his constituency.”
They said the criticism should not be dismissed with a wave of the
hand because it came from the speaker, who is not only a Peoples
Democratic Party member like Jonathan, but the nation’s number four
citizen.
Tambuwal had at an event organised by the Nigerian Bar Association
to mark the 2013 International Anti-Corruption Day in Abuja on
Monday , said the President’s body language did not show he had the
political will to stem graft in the country.
The APC, in a statement by its Interim National Publicity Secretary,
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, commended Tambuwal, saying by speaking out
on the way the Jonathan government was handling the anti-graft war,
he had displayed patriotism and dedication to the nation.
It described the Jonathan administration’s fight against corruption as
tepid.
The party said the speaker exhibited a rare leadership trait by
shunning partisanship to speak out against the poor manner the
Jonathan government was handling glaring corruption cases. It noted
that corruption had eaten deeper into the national fabric since
Jonathan came to power.
The APC added: "We have raised the same issues raised by the
Speaker several times in our regular intervention, but the
administration has dismissed our concerns on the altar of
partisanship.
“However, now that no less a personality than the country’s number
four citizen and a top member of the PDP is the one raising the issue,
and coming against the background of Nigeria’s slide in the 2013
rankings released recently by the global anti-corruption body
Transparency International, we hope the administration will realise
that it has only been paying a lip service to the anti-graft battle, and
perhaps make amends.”
Also, Ribadu advised Jonathan to accept Tambuwal’s advice in good
faith. He said:
"My own and what I will want to add is to talk to President Jonathan
directly and say please listen: when people talk, especially serious
people, people who are in strategic positions in our country, when
they tell you something take it and improve yourself.
“The message of the Speaker is that of Mr. President, wake up, what
you have been doing is not going well especially with the fight
against corruption. And all that he (Tambuwal) said are nothing new.
“What he said is the truth. What he said is what Nigerians believe.
What he said is the fundamental thing that today all of us are worried
and concerned. It is not to come out say they are going to fight or
they are going to be defensive. It is a matter of telling you for you to
correct yourself.”

Update On ASUU Strike: Federal Government Makes U-turn

After realizing that it doesn't have the capacity to carry out its threat
to ASUU, the Presidency on Monday said they are longer interested in
the December 9 deadline that was handed over to the striking
university teachers to return to work or get fired.
Funny enough, the Presidency is now deceiving itself by claiming 70%
of lectures returned to work...
The Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on
Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, said this while briefing journalists on
the payment of the N200bn by the Federal Government into the
“Revitalisation of Universities Infrastructure” account with the Central
Bank of Nigeria.
Okupe’s claim of “substantial compliance” was however described as
total falsehood by ASSU leadership, who also said it would not attend
a meeting on Wednesday with the Supervising Minister of Education,
Nyesom Wike, and vice-chancellors on the University Needs
Assessment Report Implementation Committee.
Okupe had claimed that Government is soft pedalling on the threat to
sack the defiant ASUU members because many senior citizens and
institutions had intervened. He said that as of Sunday evening,
government had reports that there was substantial compliance by
many lecturers with the directive.
The Presidential aide added that the development encouraged the
government to mellow down.
Okupe however added that there is proof for the N200billion now and
pleaded with ASUU to end the strike.
