Is President Jonathan Afraid Of This Pastor's Prayer?

It seems Jonathan is saying 'don't lay that hand on
my head o'! *laffs* Could it be he doesn't trust the
pastor?

I think something is wrong here.

...how can a Pastor
be praying for you and your eyes are open, your ADC
is at alert with his eyes open too and you, the Oga at
the top, started shifting your head from his hand
stylishly?

Has President Jonathan Lost Control?

APC Unveils Manifesto For The Rapid Development of Nigeria

Fast-growing opposition party, All Progressives
Congress (APC), is set to unveil its manifesto,
designed as a "Roadmap To A New Nigeria", at the
party's National Summit to be held in Abuja on
Thursday, March 6th.
The manifesto was a product of an empirical and
painstaking process embarked upon by APC in a
deviation from the old practice of packaging a party's
manifesto on a whim.
''With conditions deteriorating throughout
Nigeria, with security an ever increasing
concern, with the lack of jobs pushing families
and young people further and further into
poverty and with new stories of corruption
within the PDP government appearing day after
day, the APC decided to commission the largest
ever public opinion survey in Nigerian history to
determine the current status of things in the
nation directly from those who knew best - the
actual people of Nigeria.
''The results were even more revealing than the
APC had anticipated : When asked, 'If the
election were held today, would you vote for
Goodluck Jonathan or the candidate of the All
Progressives Congress', the APC candidate held
a ten-point lead over the President. By a margin
of 44% to 34% (with 22% undecided), the APC
candidate was the clear national choice.
''When asked, 'In general, do you think things in
Nigeria are going in a good direction or bad
direction', by a staggering more than two-to-one
margin (50%-24%), Nigerians responded that the
country was going in a bad direction. When asked,
'What issue would you like the President and National
Assembly to focus on most', an overwhelming
majority (60%) said jobs was the dominant issue that
the government should address .
''And then when asked if they found the following
statement convincing or not, 'Goodluck Jonathan
has done nothing to create jobs, and far too many
people are still unemployed', decisively, 58% of
Nigerians found that argument about Jonathan
convincing. Finally when asked if Jonathan was
doing a good or bad job fighting corruption, 59%
Nigerians thought Jonathan was doing a bad job
fighting corruption."
Interim National Publicity Secretary of APC, Alhaji Lai
Mohammed, said in a statement issued on Sunday
that the Road-map will detail the party's priorities in
fixing the wide spread failings of successive PDP
governments since 1999, in order to bring hope and
succour to the long-suffering people of Nigeria.
''The voice of the people was clear: The nation is
going in the wrong direction. The nation wants
change and would not vote to re-elect Jonathan in
part because the number one issue to Nigerians is
jobs and the nation believes Jonathan has no
credibility on the issue of job creation,'' APC said.
According to the party, the unveiling of the party's
manifesto, designed with the survey results in mind
and the real needs of the Nigerian people made
evident by the people themselves, will be the clearest
indication yet that the Movement for Change has
indeed begun.

We'll Arrest Amaechi At The End of His Tenure –– Wike Boasts

It seems plans have been concluded to arrest the Governor of Rivers
State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, upon the expiration of his tenure by
May 29, 2015. This purported plan was revealed to journalists by no
other than the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike.
The Ministers said: "Once INEC announces the victory of President
Jonathan, we will immediately shut down the Port Harcourt
International Airport and all land and sea boarders in Rivers State to
prevent Governor Amaechi from escaping ."
But reacting to Wike's "childish talk", the APC said as at today
majority of Nigerians have rejected PDP and the likes of Jonathan
and Wike who have nothing good to offer the people. An APC source
said:
"Is it not if Nigerians vote for you that you can be in power? Is it
not if you are in power that you can even contemplate arresting
anybody? Let Wike continue his childish talk. Obasanjo has
already told Amaechi not to be afraid of those fake Abuja
politicians. We won't threaten anybody, but Nigerians will decide
and when the result is out Wike's eyes will be clear."
Wike is however insisting that he knows Amaechi is planning to run
away from Nigeria as soon as the PDP is declared winner of the
Presidential election in favour of President Jonathan. He speaks with
much confidence as if he already have details of the election result for
2015.
Wike who spoke during a PDP function over the weekend in Port
Harcourt, claimed that the PDP will win an election in Rivers State
and Nigeria, no matter what anybody thinks.

SSS Cautions Asari Dokubo, Tells Him To Go Home

The State Security Service on Thursday evening released ex-Niger
Delta militant leader Dokubo-Asari, after some hours of
interrogation. Asari, who arrived at the headquarters of the SSS in
Abuja at 9.45am was said to have been quizzed for about six hours
over his threat to Nigerians.
The ex-militant was invited by SSS, following his inflammatory
statements in connection to the 2015 election, in which he said there
will be bloodshed, even if President Goodluck Jonathan is defeated in
a free election.

The self acclaimed warlord was cautioned and allowed to go home
around 4pm.

David Mark, No Court Order Bars You From Reading Senators' Defection Letter To APC

The All Progressives Congress has said contrary to
the misinformation being peddled in some quarters, there is no
existing court order barring the 11 former PPD Senators from
defecting to the APC last week

In a statement issued in Ilorin on Sunday by its Interim
National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the
existing court order is to the effect that the Senate President and the
Speaker of the House of Representatives should maintain the status
quo concerning defecting lawmakers.
"What this order means is that neither the President of the
Senate nor the Speaker of the House can declare vacant the
seats of the defecting lawmakers. It does not mean the letter of
notification from defecting members cannot be read on the floor
of the chambers."
APC said that in view of this, the argument that the defecting
letter cannot be read on the floor, so as not to contravene the
Senate's Standing Rules that precludes the upper chamber from
discussing any matter that is already in court, does not apply in this
case.
"We are not asking that the issue of the defection should
be discussed or debated on the floor of the Senate. All we are saying
is that the Senate President should read the letter of notification. The
coast is very clear for this to be done, and the Senate President is
duty bound to do so," the party said.
It reminded those who may somehow be engaging in wishful
thinking - that the 11 Senators can be tactically prevented from
defecting from the PDP to the APC - to know that it is too late in the
day for anyone to stall the move on the basis of a non-existent court
order or a Standing Rule that will only be operational if indeed there
is a court order expressly concerning the Senators' letter.
"The act of defection by the 11 Senators took place the moment
they handed the letter to the Senate President at 10am on the
morning of Wednesday 29th of January 2014 whether or not the
Senate President
goes ahead to read the letter. Therefore, trying to stall the defection
by stonewalling on the letter or attempting to secure a dubious
injunction especially when our lawyers were not served the motion
papers until about 4pm of the same Wednesday is like seeking
to abort a pregnancy when the baby has already been born.
"The existing court order that the Senate President and the
House Speaker should maintain the status quo actually strengthens
the letter written by the Senators who defected, because it says that
their seats cannot be declared vacant until the issue has been
determined, hence their defection letter should be read without delay."

NG UPDATE : PDP In Confusion As Atiku Dumps Party For APC

The battle for the 2015 presidency is going to be an epic one. As you
read this, there is anxiety in the PDP as another of its big names, ex-
Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his men all over Nigeria, have
concluded all underground consultations and are said to be heading
to the leading opposition party, the APC.

Already, Atiku’s supporters in five of the nation’s six geopolitical
zones have voted in support of his move to the APC. The only
exception was North-Central zone where voting on his move was 50
for and 50 against.

“The PDP is worried about the consequences of losing one of its
founding fathers to APC. With ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo
withdrawing from the activities of the party, it will be a blow to
lose Atiku too .

“Some emissaries from the Presidency and the PDP have had
audience with Atiku in Dubai and Abuja. You can imagine their
desperation in trailing him to Dubai."

Credible sources told The Nation that Atiku is convinced by the
unanimous decision of his supporters that to join the APC is the best
option for.

A reliable source said: “There is also anxiety in the PDP because Atiku
would not leave the party without some political heavyweights
following him.”

The votes for Atiku to move are: 88% for APC, 10% for PDM and only
2% for PDP.

EXPOSED: The Okonjo-Iweala's Scandalous 2014 Budget

One of the key functions the National Assembly are expected to dwell
on is the consideration and passage of the 2014 budget proposal as
present by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for the Executive. Below are the sad
details:
Apparently, our State House functions as an integrated town that
must have every facility within. After all it has its own church
(chapel) and mosque and even a zoo where N8m would be spent
to upgrade and maintain it and an additional sum of N14.5m
would be spent to purchase two beasts , all for the pleasure of its
privileged patrons. And this is after we budgeted N7.5m for
wildlife conservation in the State House last year. [ Pure
MADNESS]!
Still in the State House, there is plan to spend N76.3m to
purchase ‘crested cutlery, flatware and glassware’ . Now, isn’t
that too much to spend on those items, for a State House that
has existed for years and been playing host to several dinners?
We don’t dispose of dinnerware on a yearly basis, do we?
General maintenance in the State House will cost N1.19b of
which N138.9 will go for motor vehicle and transport equipment
maintenance, N907m for office and residential building
maintenance; N17.4m for office furniture maintenance and N40m
to maintain office and IT equipment (that comes to spending
more than N3m each month to maintain office and IT equipment
in the office of the president).
Recalling that only last year, we budgeted N90.9m for this item,
it is bewildering why we plan to spend so much this year. Yet,
this is aside N188.3m to be spent on office stationery and
computer consumables (for which we budgeted N507.9m last
year).
It is hoped this exposé will help our parliamentarians make informed
decisions when considering the budget:
One way to look at the budget is to consider what each of the heads
and figures allocated means for our country and its development.
Here are a few of those queries.
The first observation to make is that the budget proposal allocates
76.3% to recurrent expenditure and just 23.7% to capital expenditure.
One interpretation of this is that the budget is meant to just keep the
country and its institutions running with nothing spectacular to show
for. A budget focused on massive development of infrastructure would
assign more to capital rather than to recurrent which covers
personnel and overhead costs.
About 42 ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) will spend
more on their recurrent than on capital and in some instances the
difference is so huge. Here are a few cases:
The Ministry of Interior which is expected to spend N144.7b in
recurrent and just N6.29b on capital; Police formation and
commands, N285.5b and N6.79b; Education including UBEC,
N443.9b and N49.5b and Health, N216.4b and N46.3b.
Zeroing in on the Interior Ministry’s budget shows that the Prisons
Service would spend N45.2b on recurrent and a mere N2.3b on
capital. With such lopsided allocation, it is doubtful if our prisons
infrastructure would be revamped from their current state of
dilapidation and dehumanisation this year.
Equally difficult to carry out would be construction of new prisons to
decongest the present number, even as the country has just signed a
deal with the UK that might see the repatriation of more than 600
Nigerians serving jail terms in the UK to come home to complete their
sentences.
But why is the recurrent expenditure so huge?
Perhaps we should look at what typically appears under the recurrent
expenditure, particularly under the overhead costs. Here are a few of
such expenditure heads which need more explanation to the Nigerian
public. What do we mean by ‘Welfare packages’, which will gulp as
much as N40.4m in the headquarters of the Ministry of Water
Resources ? Please note that the said figure is not for the entire
ministry and agencies under it, rather for the headquarters. Welfare
package typically appears in the budget of every MDA and one
wonders who audits this spending. How is the money disbursed, to
whom and under what circumstances? Who determines the quantum
to be disbursed in every office? Under what rules of engagement or
laws did we turn our government offices to welfare package
disbursers? This budget head is one that needs to be checked or
discouraged as it is susceptible to abuse and corruption.
Other heads of interest demanding explanation include:
‘Cleaning and fumigation services’ (for which the Headquarters of the
Foreign Affairs Ministry would spend N201.7m and the Niger Delta
Ministry will spend N25m on) and ‘Anniversaries and celebrations (for
which the Ministry of Women Affairs will spend N71.6m)’. There are
also budgetary heads for ‘Printing of security documents’; ‘Printing of
non-security documents’; ‘Field and camping materials
supplies’ (N4.39m in the Ministry of Women Affairs); ‘Uniforms and
other clothing’; ‘Refreshments and meals’ (N16.7m in the Ministry of
Women Affairs); ‘Honorarium and sitting allowance’ and ‘consultancy
services for budget preparation’ (N8.36m in the Ministry of Women
Affairs). This last bit suggests that the Ministry of Women Affairs has
no internal personnel to prepare its budget for the year and for that
reason it would procure consultant(s) to help it do so and it would
then part with N8.36m).
There are even more interesting budgetary provisions elsewhere,
including the State House. For instance, the State House
Headquarters plans to purchase an embalming machine at the cost of
N1.65m and a hydraulic post-mortem table at N4m. What morbid
humour! Of course we know what embalmment and post-mortem are
about, but in the State House Headquarters? No doubt there is a
clinic in the State House, but I am not sure that clinic caters for a
very large number of clients requiring it to have every kind of
specialised units including mortuary. I am sure any such requirement
for embalmment and post-mortem would not be routine and
frequently required in a clinic in the State House and thus the said
equipment cannot be seen as necessities. If and when such needs
arise, referral could be made to larger state hospitals like the National
Hospital.
A peep into the budget for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs brings its
own excitement. For instance, we plan to spend money for the
maintenance of plants and generators in several of our foreign
missions, including the one in London. It’s with the same incredulity
that we notice the plan to spend money in fuelling boats and aircraft
in virtually all of our foreign missions. As an example, we plan to
spend N2.38m and N1.78m respectively for the above services in our
Foreign Mission in Abidjan. As earlier mentioned the foreign
ministry’s headquarters would part with N201.7m for fumigation and
cleaning services during the year.
There is this entry of N100m for the maintenance of Nigeria’s seat in
the UN Security Council . Pray what does that come to? One would
think that since we have a permanent representative to the UN, that
office would be responsible for attending Security Council meetings,
which cost would be borne by the UN anyway. So what would the
N100m be used for?
Other interesting budgetary provisions proposed in this ministry
include N40m for ‘global power on women’s empowerment, HIV and
SRHR’ and N9m to be spent by one of its agencies, the Institute for
Peace and Conflict Resolution for ‘building democracy as an
instrument of peace’. And although every MDA budgets for health
insurance subscription as well as medicals, there is still this curious
budgetary head in the foreign affairs ministry known as ‘cost of
medical treatment for Mrs. XYZ (I have withheld the real names) at
St. Andrews Burns Service at Broomfield Hospital’ for the sum of
N49.76m . [Medical bill of one woman N49.76m? ] I am just curious
why an individual’s name is listed in a federal budget as a spending.
Who is the person? Why is this cost not subsumed in other medical
costs or covered by insurance?
Next, the Foreign Affairs ministry plans to spend N834.4m to
purchase and freight 40 ‘representational cars’ to 40 of our foreign
missions. This translates to N20.86m as average cost for the cars.
Wouldn’t this cost be reduced if these cars are bought in the
locations they are to be used?
The above are just some of the numerous scandalous items in the
budget that one could query because they don’t appear to show
prudence in the management of our resources.
As the National Assembly considers the budget, it is hoped that they
would be detailed enough to query these and more bogus and
phoneey entries in the Appropriation Bill.

Jonathan Plots to Use Security on Senators Who Dumped PDP

Shaken by the bold move of the defections from its camp to the All
Progressives Congress (APC), President Goodluck Jonathan and the
PDP is plotting to declare the seats of defecting senators vacant and
further their grip on some security agencies to oppress Bukola Asari
and other Senators.

“The PDP believes that the Senate leadership should brave the
odds and declare the seats of defecting senators vacant – in line
with the spirit and letters of the constitution. The party is of the
opinion that the court should determine the fate of the defecting
senators.

“As part of the plot, once the seats of the affected senators are
declared vacant, the police and security agencies will disallow
them from entering the hallowed chamber of the Senate, until
there is a ruling by any court.

“And since the wheel of justice is very slow, it is technically
assumed that the affected senators have completed their tenure.”

A credible source told The Nation about the secret move.
11 senators left PDP for the APC on Wednesday, raising the number of
APC senators to 43, PDP 63.

The PDP is said to be mounting pressure on Senate President David
Mark to declare the defecting senators’ seats vacant. But, it was
gathered that Mark, who is seen by many as “a defender of
democracy” since 2010, declined to join the plot.

A source said: “The PDP is going for the kill because of the threats
which defectors might pose to its majority grip on the Senate. The
only challenge the party is having is the senate president who, as a
democrat, does not believe in recourse to draconian action.”

A former governor, who is one of the defecting senators, said:
"We are aware of the plot to declare our seats vacant and bar us from
the Senate, but they cannot succeed."

Senator Bukola Saraki, Other Senators Dump PDP & Join APC

The first batch of Senators dumping Peoples Democratic Party for the
All Progressives Congress have made the move as promised over the
weekend. Eleven PDP Senators on Wednesday morning dumped the
party and moved over to the APC.

A formal letter to this effect has been delivered to the Senate
President, Senator David Mark and he is expected to be read it to
all senators on the floor of the Senate.
Below are the names of the 11 Senators who dumped PDP for APC...

Senator Bukola Saraki - Kwara Central
Sen. Abdulahi Adamu - Nasarawa West
Sen. Mohammed Danjuma Goje - Gombe central
Senator Magnus Ngei Abe - Rivers South-East
Senator Wilson Asinobi Ake - Rivers West
Senator Umaru Dahiru - Sokoto South
Sen. Bindawa Muhammed Jibrilla - Adamawa North
Sen. Aisha Jummai Alhassan - Taraba North
Sen. Mohammed Ali Ndume - Borno South
Senator Mohammed Shaba Lafiaji - Kwara North
Senator Ibrahim Abdullahi Gobir - Sokoto East
According to the senators, this is just the first instalment as many
more PDP Senators are set to join APC.

The Fight Between President Jonathan and Governor Amaechi

On that fateful day when First Lady Patience Jonathan snatched a
microphone from Gov Rotimi Amaechi at a function and in the public
glare, thoroughly rebuked him for undermining her Okirika people, it
didn’t occur to her that she might have murdered sleep by attacking
an elected governor.
But observers are quick to also trace the crisis to a number of other
issues such as ethnicity rivalry between Ikwere and Okirika ethnic
nationalities in Rivers State, envy, political high handedness, naked
ambition, undue police interference and unhealthy rivalry between
former associates and the race for 2015.
Rivalry between the Okirika and Ikwere ethnic group
Just as it exists in every facet of Nigerian politics, ethnicity usually
plays a critical role and in the case of Rivers State, which has several
tongues and tribes, tribal factor usually plays the critical roles in the
political calculations of the state.
In Rivers State, there is deeply rooted, unhealthy rivalry between the
Ikwerre and Okrika people and this has largely contributed to
Nigeria’s First Lady’s local and national affront against the Rivers
State governor, who is an Ikwerre.
It is believed that Dame Jonathan is at the background of most of the
offensives against Amaechi. The conflict between the two first reared
its head in 2010, at a reception organised for the First Lady by her
Okrika community and the Rivers State government.
At the ill-fated event, Governor Amaechi, while trying to impress on
the First Lady the achievements and projections of the state
government in the area of infrastructural development, was said to
have told her the plans of the state government to demolish some
buildings in the area, to pave way for new developments around the
area.
Even as the plans did not go down well with the First Lady, she was
said to have been less impressed with the language and presentation
of the plans by the governor. She was said to have been miffed by
what she described as the arrogant nature of the presentation by the
state’s Chief Executive.
This resulted in a minor scuffle, at the event as Dame Jonathan, who
is noted to be passionate about her people and constituency was said
to have wrestled the microphone from the governor and went ahead
to publicly scolded the governor. “You are saying, we will pull down,
we will pull down. Stop acting God with the lives of less fortunate
others,” she yelled at the governor.
Intrigues of Amaechi’s NGF chairmanship
Amaechi succeeded former Kwara State governor, Bukola Saraki as the
chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF, in 2011 for a two
year tenure but on the expiration of his tenure in 2013, the governor
sought for re-election against the advice of both his party and the
presidency.
His refusal to yield to reasons adduced by these superior organs led
to the victimisation that he was to receive. NGF believed to be
politically potent in the decision as to who emerges as the president
of the federation, if left in the hands of an independent and
‘recalcitrant’ Amaechi could spell doom for the ruling party and so,
efforts to wrestle such power from him ensued.
First, Rivers State was divested of her oil well resulting to revenue
shrunk. The aircraft belonging to the state government was
impounded in a not too civil manner and top officials of the
government severally harassed by the anti- corruption agencies of the
government.
In one of his very numerous interviews, Amaechi, voicing out his
frustration, said that his government was a major target by
Jonathan’s government and even dared the President to mention
anything that the state which voted for him massively in the 2011
election has done to him to warrant such ostracisation.
The defiant Amaechi had gone ahead to contest the NGF election
where 19 voted in his favour while 16 voted for his rival, the Plateau
State governor, Jonah Jang, in an election declared inconclusive. NGF
has since been factionalized into two camps: Pro-Amaechi and pro-
Jang. The impact of the struggle has seen five PDP governors defect
to the APC with their supporters.
The ripple effect has also seen the PDP losing majority in the lower
chamber of the National Assembly, the House of Representatives. The
relationship between the governor and the occupants of the Aso Villa
turned to the worse, as the President and the governor has up till
then had a sort of indifferent relationship.
A divided house
The political scenario in the state has since being polarised as the
crisis had crystallised into an open full-blown conflict after an Abuja
High Court removed the Amaechi-backed state executive committee
and installed Chief Felix Obuah instead. The implication of the court
verdict is the removal of the rugs off the feet of the state governor as
he no longer has control of the party in the state as the new party
executive is loyal to the Supervisory Minister of Education, Nyesom
Wike.
On takeoff, the Obuah-led exco announced that it will reconcile
aggrieved members of the party, but from its inception, it has been
involved in one conflict after the other with the state government and
those associated with it, with its short existence largely characterised
with all sorts of suspensions, expulsions.
The relationship between the governor and his erstwhile Chief of Staff,
CoS, now Supervising Minister of Education, Wike has turned sour
over the years.
Wike was at the forefront of Amaechi’s fight to claim his mandate for
governorship in 2007 and on becoming governor of the state;
Amaechi made him one of the greatest beneficiaries of his first tenure
in office, as he made him the CoS, with sweeping powers and
influence. Some people in the state referred to him as the “de-facto
governor,” while he was in Amaechi’s cabinet.
Things went sour between the two associates when a governorship/
senatorial ambition drove a wedge between the two. There have been
conflicting stories about betrayal between the two.
Wike however, moved on and was able to warm his way into the heart
of the Presidency and he is alleged to be doing the Presidency’s
hatchet job on his former boss. Amaechi, on his own part, has
exhibited some executive high handedness when he, in spite of a court
judgment suspended the duly elected chairman of Obio/Akpor Local
Government, Hon Timothy Paul Nsirim, with the aid of the loyal
Rivers State House of Assembly without regard to the rule of law as
the matter was never debated by the entire Assembly. The allegation
of reckless spending of public funds without due process and security
breach levelled against the chairman who happens to be loyal to Wike
and councilors of Obio/Akpor LGA was never substantiated
Odili and his yesterday men
Another factor, which was responsible for the crisis was linked with
some politicians in the state, who were associates of former Governor
Peter Odili, most of whom have now found themselves out of
government. These politicians are said not to be comfortable with the
fierce buccaneering nature of the young governor. “Amaechi’s swash-
buckling did not go down well with them. They want control of the
party structure and purse strings, but they are not even close to it
with Amaechi,” an informed political watcher in the state explained.
The governor refers to these set of politicians as those who are only
interested in their “stomach infrastructures.” He vowed never to
relinquish the state’s treasury to them and he has vigorously resisted
various attempts to involve these individuals in state matters. On the
assumption of Amechi as the governor, political bigwigs such as the
former Deputy Speakers of the House of Representatives, Chief Austin
Okpara and Chibudom Nwuche, former Governor Celestine Omehia,
Senator Lee Meeba, current Deputy National Chairman of the PDP,
Prince Uche Secondus, old war horse Sergent Awuse amongst others
have found themselves in the retirement market so soon.
Having been frozen out of the political market for such a long time
appear to put their weights behind Wike, the arrow head to seize
power, an action that Amaechi is vehemently resisting.
The role of the police
The police, in the state have variously been alleged to be part of the
factors igniting the flame of the crisis in the state and the attitude
and operations of the security men under the leadership of much-
vilified state Police Commissioner, Joseph Mbu, has not done much
to disabuse people’s mind about these allegations. Mbu, is mostly
regarded as and to some extent, clearly anti-Amaechi.
It is rumoured that the main reason for Mbu’s posting to Rivers State
was to involve him in Aso Rock’s battle against the state governor.
However, unfortunately, Mbu’s conducts and his mode of operation
has been characterised largely by unpopular decisions, including the
arrests of traditional rulers, youths, community leaders and
politicians, perceived to be loyal to the state governor.
A worrisome development in the crisis surfaced when large scale
violence was introduced to the conflict which has now gain the
attention of the local and international communities, especially the
two chambers of the National Assembly.
The opposing camps characteristically have started singing war songs
and constantly hauled abusive and degrading languages at each
other. However, it turned into a full blown crisis recently when the
state House of Assembly was turned into a battle ground by the two
opposing camps. Five lawmakers loyal to Wike, led by Hon. Evans
Bipi tried to impeach the House leadership including the Speaker of
the House, Amachree Otelemaba.
This has resulted in a rowdy session, with the resultant fracas leading
to the hospitalisation of both the Majority Leader of the House, Hon.
Chidi LIoyd and a pro-Wike lawmaker, Michael Chinda.
Under Commissioner Mbu’s watch, a few instances of the brazen
lawlessness and violations of the Constitution were allegedly carried
such as the forceful dispersal of 13,201 newly recruited teachers in
the Port Harcourt Stadium using tear gas; blockading the entrance to
the Government House in Port Harcourt and forcing the Amaechi to
use another entrance; preventing an aircraft chartered by the state
governor from taking off, alleging that the governor was trying to
smuggle out a legislator wanted by the Police, the several disruptions
of the Save Rivers Group rallies, and the unlawful detention of
anybody perceived to be a sympathiser of Governor Amaechi, while
allowing pro-Jonathan an anti-Amaechi groups to organise rallies
unmolested, with full police protection, amongst others.
Calls have been made for the sack or redeployment of Mbu but
neither the force nor the Presidency will hear of that. Mbu has done
his job as a fine officer who is apolitical. But most Nigerians believe
that there is much to the police commissioner’s bravado.
Amaechi’s defection and attendant harassment
After the state governor, had predictably defected to the opposition
party, All Progressives Party, APC, together with his supporters in
December 2013, there have been wide spread attacks against him and
his supporters. Amaechis’s associates have variously accused the
state Police Commissioner of favouritism.
They alleged that whereas pro-Wike’s group, the Grassroot
Development Initiave, GDI, has been organising campaign rallies where
the group and its sponsors have campaigned for the President
unmolested, even though it is against the electoral laws, members of
the opposition have been denied of same privilege by the police.
On January 11, this year, the Police appeared to have showed its own
agenda in the crisis when its men allegedly shot Senator Magnus Abe
at the Rivers State College of Arts and Science, venue of a proposed
rally organised by RSM, a group believed be loyal to Amaechi, few
hours before the event.
The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Ahmad
Muhammad, blamed the incident on the political group for not
applying for permit to hold the Sunday rally.
He added that the crowd has to be dispersed for this reason. But the
Chairman of the Save Rivers Movement, Aholu Okechukwu, made
available to journalists copies of the application for permit to hold
the rally written to the state Police on January 7. Reactions have
been more favourable to the pro-Amaechi camp as against the police
actions, in spite of the fact that the police have maintained that it will
be failing in its duty if it stands and watch the peace of Rivers State
being trampled upon.
APC on the offensive
The APC, Governor Amaechi’s new party last week came in defence of
one of its own with a directives to its members in the National
Assembly to block all legislative proposals which include the 2014
Budget as well as the confirmation of all nominees to military and
civilian positions to public office until the rule of law and
constitutionalism is restored in Rivers State.
APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, said that the
party has resolved that if President Jonathan fails to halt the
intimidation of Amaechi and offer apologies, it would call all its
members to take whatever steps that are necessary to protect their
lives and property.
He said: “Any cursory observer of events in Rivers State since
February, 2013 will be left in no doubt as to the culture of lawlessness
and impunity being promoted and supported by the Presidency, and
executed by the state Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mbu, who has
become the de-facto military governor of Rivers State and sole
administrator of the PDP in the State.”
The battle for 2015
The situation in the state is such that Amaechi with the support of
the teaming voters will face Jonathan who has in his aisle the timbre
and calibre of Rivers politicians and the dreaded militants who have
benefitted so much from his amnesty programme. It is really
unpredictably where the pendulum will anchor but one thing that is
expected is that even the victor in this epic battle will certainly come
out with ugly bruises.

PDP and APC Senators Clash Over Jonathan's Budget

The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Tuesday began
debate on the 2014 Appropriation bill with members disagreeing
along party lines on its passage.
While the Peoples Democratic Party senators commended the bill and
called for its immediate approval, their All Progressives Congress
counterparts sought its rejection and return to the Executive for a
rejig.
In fact, one of the APC lawmakers, who said the bill “does not
worth the paper it was written on,” called for the resignation of
the Minister of Finance and the Supervising Minister for the
Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, because she had
disappointed Nigerians.
APC senators said a budget where 2 animals in Aso Rock get more
money than most Nigerians is crazy...
But to PDP senators, the appropriation bill should be passed because
it would promote economic growth and add my drive to the so called
Transformation Agenda of the Goodluck Jonathan administration.
Before they started making their contributions, the President of the
Senate, David Mark, had enjoined them to use “national magnifying
glasses to view the budget instead of reducing it to partisan politics.”
Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu of PDP, however
complained that several critical projects being executed in various
parts of the country were not captured in the 2014 budget.
Senator Issa Galaudu captured it clearly when he said:
“From N947bn in 1999 to N4.6 tn today, the budget has grown by
over 400 per cent, but the impact has not been felt by all Nigerians.
There are some bloated expenses. Even with huge security budget,
every MDA has security provisions. All these make capital expenditure
smaller.”
Senators Ahmed Lawan described the budget as anti-people, adding
that it was packaged to further boost the economic power of
politicians, senior civil servants and big businessmen who are close
to the Presidency.

MKO Abiola's Wife Declares For Governorship In Lagos

The race for who should replace Governor Babatunde Fashola of
Lagos State come 2015 is about to get very interesting as Mrs Dupe
Onitiri-Abiola, one of the wives of late Chief MKO Abiola, has
announced her bid to contest the governorship seat in Lagos State in
the next general elections.

Mrs Onitiri-Abiola while making her governorship ambition known,
says she now has "all the formula to solve unemployment, electricity
and education problems plaguing Lagos state".

The woman who appears to be serious with her move, has not
revealed the political party she would contest on. She is still studying
the existing parties and would make her choice known by February
2014.

Will Lagosians vote for Onitiri-Abiola? I guess only time will tell.

PDP Main Problems Just Starting, Says Atiku; Backs Obasanjo

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that the real troubles
of the PDP is just about to start and that the party's new chairman,
Adamu Muazu, whose daughter is married to his son, cannot save
PDP.

“I don’t think the end of PDP’s trouble is over with Bamanga
Tukur’s ousted. I don’t think so; the troubles of the PDP are yet
to come. I don’t think Bamanga is the trouble, I don’t think
Bamanga is the issue.”

On why he is in agreement with ex-President Obasanjo over President
Jonathan, Atiku said:
“We don’t consult with Obasanjo, but the striking thing I want you to
reflect upon is, read my convention address, read President
Obasanjo’s letter. In fact there are very striking similarities, the only
thing is that I foresaw what is happening before him, that is just the
difference but basically my convention speech and the letter Obasanjo
wrote to President Jonathan have very striking similarity.”
Atiku stated this in an interview with a radio station, Liberty
Radio. He said he is in agreement with Obasanjo who recently in an
open letter to President Goodluck Jonathan, attacked the latter’s
failures in managing the affairs of the country, and for allowing his
tribal Ijaw sentiment into governance.

Asked whether the PDP that has vowed to rule Nigeria for 60 years
now have their days numbered, the angry Atiku answered in the
affirmative: “Definitely!”
On the difference between PDP and APC, Atiku explained, “The PDP
represents the conservative wing of the electoral divide, the APC
represents the social democratic [wing] of our political divide.”

See President Jonathan’s 2015 Covenant With Nigeria

Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do
not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’
–Matthew 5:33 KJV
'You shall be careful to do what has passed your lips, for you have
voluntarily vowed to the Lord your God what you have promised with
your mouth. –Deuteronomy 23:23 ESV
'When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no
pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. It is better that you should not
vow than that you should vow and not pay'. – Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 ESV
O you who believe! Why do you say that which you do not do? It is
most hateful to Allah that you should say that which you do not do. -
Qur'an 61:2-3
Quoting President Goodluck Jonathan, in Addis Ababa on January
31st, 2011, while meeting with Nigerians working in the UN and the
AU, as reported by Daniel Idonor in an article in Vanguard of 1st
February, 2011, captioned, I‘ll not contest 2015 election – Jonathan:
“President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, said he has no ambition to
stay in office beyond 2015 , assuring Nigerians in Diaspora that while
he will not contest the 2015 election, he will ensure that this year’s
election is free and fair.” not-contest-2015-election-jonathan/
This particular article was viral. Over 5000 people shared it on the
Vanguard page alone. This translated to hundreds of thousands
reading it online and many more in the print version. It was one more
of many instances in the run up to the April 2011 election where the
serving President of Nigeria assured the country’s people that if re-
elected; he will not contest in the elections in 2015, him being
strongly of the opinion that “four years is more than enough to make
all invaluable changes to a nation.”
By 2015, Jonathan would have been in Aso rock and the executive
governance of Nigeria for 8 years total. 2 years 9 months as Vice
President under a very ill and regularly absent President, 3 months as
acting President, 1 year as President in a first short term, completing
the term of late Yar’adua, and 4 more years as President and
commander –in-chief for a second, full term.
Not a novice to the possibilities of the office, the President had
already experienced considerable time as President and Vice (4 years)
and made enough executive decisions to appreciate and understand
the full context of his promise. He knew what could be done in 1+
year he had served as President and 2+ years as Vice; and
consequently understood properly better than any of us, realistically
how the 4 years he solicited and promised will be enough, and all
more time he needed to give Nigeria fresh air.
Was this promise to complete his work for Nigeria by 2015 and not
contest re-election, the word and bond of Mr. President? We have
heard that he signed this same promise. We have seen several
different copies and instances of the same promise at other times in
all other major Nigerian editorials.
Verily if this was not what the President said and promised Nigeria as
a covenant to woo and court our support to vote him in, in the April
2011 Presidential elections, he would have refuted these headlines
spread in all Nigeria’s top dailies.
Reno Omokri, Reuben Abati, Doyin Okupe or whoever was Mr.
President’s media and publicity person at the time, did not come
forward to dissociate Mr. President from this covenant, as is the case
in more trivial perceived misrepresentations. Clearly this is the word,
bond and covenant of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan with the
people of Nigeria, made before God and man.
This was the covenant upon which the Nigerian masses agreed to
select him and vote him into power.
These simple, fresh-breezy words, the promise to not deathly cling on
to power but to rather ensure he establishes a free and fair playing
ground come 2015 for whoever might contest, made many of us
support his candidacy. This was not just another political promise.
This was his memento insignia.
We have little excuse not to give him the benefit of trust. He swore to
us that he will not be a liar:
What I do promise is this -- if I am elected president in 2011, I will
make a covenant with you, the Nigerian people, to always do right by
you, to tell you the truth at all times… –Goodluck Jonathan on
faceBook; CNN, September 15, 2010
It is 12 months to elections! Nigerians call upon our President to
fulfill the other part of his covenant, - the creation of a true and
decent election setup for the best State and Presidential candidates
who emerge from PDP, APC, LP, PDM, NCP, SNP, APGA, AD and
whatever other political platforms to contest come 2015. He will do
well by also helping Nigeria establish a decree that bans all old
politicians and their crooked friends, mentors and mentees from future
elections, participation, sponsorship or otherwise. It is time for our
Youth… a fresh start… a new leaf. Like clock-work, throughout our
history, the Military take over when we violate our promises to the
people and mess-up. Do we want this?
Mr. President has not come out to declare he will violate his word
and break his covenant. I do trust our President will not do any such
thing. I believe he is a man of honor, of truth and a man who fears
God.
Sadly and why I write this is that, I believe it is legally permissible for
him to say he is not running; what he cannot yet do is say he is
running —due to INEC stipulations. I wonder why he hesitates to say
what Nigeria is sure he will —that he won’t be running? Why toy with
us on something as serious as a covenant before God and man with a
pledge to be true and do right?
Now, indeed and in truth and from the beginning of time and surely
till the end of time, people will break their covenants to man and God
and renege on their vows.
But let those of us who do so beware, and let those of us who support
such betrayal and fraud be conscious of the consequences. “The Lord
has no pleasure in fools!”
May the anger and curse of God not be upon the great peoples and
nations of Nigeria. Amen.

Atiku: The Dilemma of A Political Strategist Ahead of 2015

The invitation extended to a former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, by
the All Progressives Congress and the appointment of Adamu Mu’azu
as national chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, appears
to have put the famed political strategist in a fix.
Atiku is not a new swimmer in the Nigeria’s murky political
waters. He has been in politics for long enough to know how
unpredictable Nigerian politicians could be.
Followers of history would recall how Atiku was forced out of the
ruling Peoples Democratic Party by his former boss, the then
President Olusegun Obasanjo, prior to the 2007 presidential
election. Desirous of a shot at the Presidency, Atiku teamed up
with politicians in the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria,
where he was handed the party’s ticket...
He lost the final contest to late President Umaru Yar’Adua, who was
the candidate of the PDP. As the race for the 2011 presidential
election drew nearer, Atiku dumped the ACN and returned to the PDP.
He was accommodated and allowed to contest PDP’s presidential
ticket. This happened with a lot of drama.
When it dawned on the northern elders that President Goodluck
Jonathan was keen on contesting the party’s primaries, they called on
their sons to invoke an unwritten power rotation agreement in an
attempt to stop him. They were schooled on the need to have a sole
candidate who would slug it out with Jonathan at Eagles Square,
Abuja for the PDP’s sole ticket.
Among northerners who showed interest in the race were a former
military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida; a former NSA, Gen. Muhammad
Gusau; a former Governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki; and Atiku.
The northern elders, led by a former Minister of Finance, Adamu
Ciroma, met and perused the credentials of all the aspirants. That of
Atiku suited them most. Thus, he became the anointed candidate of
the group.
Atiku must have been surprised to learn that despite his seeming
popularity among fellow northerners who chose him ahead of other
contenders from the zone, this did not translate into victory during
the presidential primaries.
When the Returning Officer for the PDP Presidential primaries, Prof.
Tunde Adeniran, announced the results, Atiku, who is considered a
master strategist in Nigeria’s political circles, lost woefully.
According to Adeniran, 3,542 delegates voted. Jonathan received the
highest number of votes—2,736—representing 78 per cent of the total
votes cast while Atiku came a distant second with 805 votes.
The third contestant, Mrs. Sarah Jubril, received only one vote which
pre-supposes that she was the only person who voted for herself, 61
votes were voided.
Many northerners who wanted one of their own on the saddle faulted
Atiku’s return to the PDP at the time. It is believed that if he had
remained in the ACN, he would probably have been the party’s sole
candidate for the 2011 presidential election.
However, the ACN was accused of being a sectional party at the time
with its sphere of influence confined to the South-West geo-political
zone. A lot has changed since then. The decision of the party’s
leaders to team up with other opposition political parties such as the
Congress for Progressive Change and the All Nigeria Peoples Party to
form the All Progressives Congress has not only enlarged its coast, it
has empowered it to pose a significant threat to the dominance of the
ruling PDP.
Herein lays Atiku’s dilemma. The APC delegation led by its Interim
National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, felt the Turakin Adamawa still
has a lot to offer in terms of political capital. Akande and his team
pointedly asked Atiku to leave the PDP and join their fold.
Ever the strategist, Atiku had asked his guests for time to consult his
friends and associates before making a commitment.
He said, “I have given them an indication that I will call a meeting of
all my stakeholders across the country and we will take a decision
and tell the press.”
Roll call of the delegation at the parley include; a former Governor of
Lagos State, Bola Tinubu; Governor of Borno State, Ibrahim Shettima;
a former Speaker of House of Representatives, Bello Masari; Senator
George Akume, a former minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, Chief
Ogbonnaya Onu, a former chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission, Nuhu Ribadu and Senator Kabiru Gaya.
Akande said the party decided to meet Atiku, against the background
that “our country is being rubbished; we feel that it is necessary to
meet people of like minds to rise up and salvage the country. All of us
that met here were comrades in politics from time to time, we only
met today to cement that comradeship, and all is well cemented and
we are moving together to work for this country.”
Atiku recalled that he and some of the members of the delegation had
been in politics together for about 24years. He said,“It is time we
realise we have responsibility to our generation and those yet
unborn.”
He referred to the African National Congress in South Africa,
reiterating that “as strong as the ANC is, its internal democracy is
unparallel. I have seen where there is healthy competition without
bitterness. If the South Africans faced apartheid, Nigeria is facing
colonialism, the struggle has been long for the enthronement of
democracy.”
The former Vice-President said he had started the consultations he
promised. In a statement, which he personally signed, he said, “As we
begin the New Year, our nation has to begin anew. As you are aware,
I have been engaged in formal and informal meetings with Nigerians
for a while. And for the next few weeks, I will be travelling across the
country in continuation of the consultative process.
“I will continue to listen to the hopes and fears of our people, so that
together, we can build a future that we all can be proud of. The times
we are in call for hard work because Nigerians matter and our country
matters, too. I believe that this consultative process will reinforce our
shared values and throw up a new way forward for our dear country.”
Sources close to the Turaki Adamawa said that he had met with
political associates and key stakeholders in Abuja, Dubai and London.
However, he is said to be skeptical about happenings in the ruling
party just as he is not sure of his chances in APC.
For example, the selection of the new chairman of the PDP, Alhaji
Adamu Mu’azu, is said to be drawing him back. The former governor
of Bauchi State, who is said to be his political son and an in-law, is
considered in his calculation as an olive branch extended to him by
PDP, just as there are hints of high profile meetings at party and
government levels.
It was also gathered that there had been a directive that his
grievances against the party should be studied. In his letter to the
former PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Atiku noted
that as a member of the party’s Board of Trustees, he was never
invited to board meetings as such he did not attend.
He also complained about not being invited to the National Executive
Committee of the party. Under normal circumstances, by virtue of
being a former Vice-President and a leading party member, he is
entitled to invitations to attend its caucus just like his counterpart,
former Vice-President Alex Ekwueme, who receives invitations and
attends such meetings regularly.
Those in Atiku’s camp believe that there is an effort by PDP’s
managers and those in government to entrench impunity and not to
open up the party for democratic competition. Because of this, a
source close to him said Atiku believes that if “he decides to leave at
this point, it is clear that it is the PDP that left him, in the same way
the party left the country.” He is also said to have expressed worry
that the governors who remained in the party had given Jonathan an
automatic ticket for the 2015 election.
In the APC, where he is said to have most of his friends as members,
Atiku has the impression that the party offers a real chance for
change and reform in the country.
He is also convinced that Nigerians are tired of business-as-usual
policy and seem determined to change their situation for the better.
Moreover, he is also said to be angling to be on the side of the
people.
One of his aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “From his
days in the Patriotic Front, and the defunct Social Democratic Party,
Atiku is in favour of the social democratic philosophy. His team sees
a real chance for harmony between his personal goals and philosophy
and party politics. There is genuine commitment to pursue and ensure
internal democracy within the party (APC) and stabilise the Nigerian
polity, a value Atiku is passionately committed to.”
Torn between Mu’azu his political son and in-law in the PDP and his
friends in the APC, only Atiku can solve the dilemma in which he has
found himself.

Governors Treat Jonathan Like Their Houseboy — Jeremiah Useni

The Chairman, Board of Trustees of Arewa Consultative Forum, and
former FCT Minister, Jeremiah Useni in this chat with The Punch talks
about political calculations of 2015 and President Jonathan's
chances.
It’s been some time since we heard your voice in the political circuit.
Why have you been quiet?
Unless there is something important, one doesn’t make noise. But I
don’t have to make noise before you know I’m around. Yes, I only talk
when there is an issue of concern to me, when there is something of
general interest and when I think my voice may be of relevance.
Some Niger-Delta activists are threatening bloodshed if Jonathan is
not allowed to contest in 2015. What is your take on this?
I agree with them on this. Jonathan has the right to contest to
complete two terms in office. There is no reason why Jonathan should
not contest in 2015. If Yar’Ardua were alive, he would be finishing his
eight years now. The man (Jonathan) took part of it. I can only say
these four years that he is about to finish will be really his own. So if
you don’t want him to spend another four years to make eight years,
you can say let him spend two-and-a-half years or so, of what
remained of Yar’Adua’s tenure to make up his own eight years.
Definitely, there is no reason why Jonathan should not go for it in
2015, unless people reject him. It is not that he is not qualified, he is
over-qualified.
So, are you opposed to agitators who want power to return to the
North?
I am from the North, I don’t agree with them. The calculation is
wrong, the calculation is selfish.
How do you assess Jonathan’s government?
The only thing I would say is he (the President) should blow hot and
cold. Too much of cold compared to hot is why this nonsense is going
on. He should balance it. I think he is doing well. One tree cannot
make a forest; he cannot run the Federal Government and also run
the states. State governments are there to do their own bit, so also
are local governments.
Looking beyond the crisis, as an elder statesman, do you think APC is
a credible alternative for Nigerians? Can you recommend it as a better
alternative to PDP? As it is now, they are next to PDP. When you are
talking of credible alternative, all I know is that they are next to PDP.
If PDP is not there, they are the next biggest party to PDP, full stop.
Whether they are credible is a different thing altogether. I won’t like to
say anything on that aspect because that would mean talking about
the individuals that make up the party.

I Told You to Join PDP, Why Did You Move to APC? ––Jeremiah Useni Dares Reps Member

Those who think House of Reps members do not have a mind of their
own will be disappointed...
Indeed, politics is an endless play out of intrigue. How else do you
explain the chairman of one party asking a member of his party to
decamp to a different party? But it actually happened.
The Chairman of the Democratic Peoples Party, DPP, General
Jeremiah Useni, has denounced a member of the House of Reps who
decamped on Tuesday from DPP to the All Progressives Congress,
APC. He says he “directed” the member to decamp to PDP and was
shock when he saw him in APC. Very funny!
Mr Useni wrote the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu
Tambuwal, saying Suleiman Kwande’s decision to join the APC is not
with his blessings.
“This is to inform you (Tambuwal) that he (Kwande) does not have
my backing, he was directed to declare for the PDP,” Mr. Useni, a
retired army general, said in his letter.
But in his reaction, Hon. Kwande says his decision to decamp to the
APC was well thought out, and after due consultations with his
constituents.
“My decision was based on my conviction. And I obviously didn’t just
jump into APC without consulting the people in my constituency, I am
representing hundreds of thousands of people and I consulted with
people.
"I don’t think giving instruction on which party to join is a good omen
for democracy. I should be able to choose where to go, not a party
chairman or someone saying you should go to this or that place.”

President Jonathan Has Declared Total War On Amaechi

Respected constitutional lawyer, Itse Sagay (SAN), on Monday
categorically stated that President Goodluck Jonathan is the real
brain behind the deadly political crisis that is shaking Rivers State to
its foundation.
While lamenting the dangerous trends, he said it is now clear from
available evidence that the president is bent on forcing the state
governor, Rotimi Amaechi, to either bow to his wishes or be
completely neutralised. This action, according to him, is undemocratic
and extremely dangerous.
“The situation is not in anybody’s hands, it is in the President’s
hands. He is the one behind the whole thing and there is no
question about that. The Police Commissioner in Rivers State,
Mbu, cannot be acting on his own. Definitely, he is taking
instructions.”
Prof Sagay insisted the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State,
Joseph Mbu, who led a team of policemen to disrupt a peaceful rally
where a serving senator, Magnus Abe, was shot, is acting on
instructions from above. That, according to him, explains why the
police boss has not been called to order.
In his words: “The way I see it, unless there is a dramatic change of
mind from the President that Amaechi, as an elected governor, can
have his own mind, have his own political leanings and that he
cannot be battered and forced into accepting the president’s plans, if
the president can develop this state of mind and leave Amaechi alone,
that is the way there can be peace.
“The mindset of the President now is that the governor should be
forced into accepting his own way or be completely neutralised . Those
are the two extreme measures being taken by the President and they
are very undemocratic and extremely dangerous,” he said.

Amaechi Slams Jonathan: Your Government worse than Abacha

Guns boomed! Smoke filled the air!! People were running and
screaming!!! Vehicles were vandalised!!!!...
That was the scene on Sunday as PDP-led militants disrupted a
Save Rivers Movement (SRM) rally in Bori, the traditional
headquarters of Ogoni and the seat of Khana Local Government
Area of Rivers State.
Secretary to the State Government (SSG) George Feyii, an Ogoni;
Chief of Staff, Government House, Chief Tony Okocha and many
allies of Governor Rotimi Amaechi were caught up in the
violence. Their vehicles were riddled with bullets while the police
looked away.
The governor, alarmed at the scale of the violence, described
President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration as worse than that of
the late dictator, General Sani Abacha. He said Jonathan is now
desperate...
Two persons were shot dead by the rampaging militants, who started
shooting from 4:00am at the venue of the SRM rally — the All Saints’
Anglican Church, Bori, not far from the State Polytechnic, Bori-Ogoni.
The militants’ attack came exactly one week after the SRM’s rally
billed for the Rivers State College of Arts and Science, Port Harcourt
was disrupted by the police, with a senator from Rivers, Magnus Abe,
shot in the chest. He is still recuperating in a London hospital.
Gov. Amaechi, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’
Forum (NGF), later in an interview at the Government House, after
inspecting the shot and vandalised vehicles at 4:45pm, also accused
the Federal Government of desperation over the 2015 elections.
Amaechi said Jonathan wants to win the 2015 at all costs, even if
people die.
The police, however, protected a group in support of President
Jonathan, Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI) who held a rally at
Degema Local Government Area in the same Rivers State.
Amaechi however said the disrupted Bori rally will hold this coming
Saturday and he promised to attend.
